Explosive Fishing Techniques

Explosive FishingAs economic difficulties increase in Indonesia, some fishermen have turned to banned fishing methods which are the quickest and easiest way of catching fish.

In the style of Crocodile Dundee, fishermen are tossing dynamite into the water to kill the fish below. Unfortunately using explosives to help catch more fish causes great damage to surrounding sea life such as coral.

Thanks to the World Wildlife Fund, patrols have been set up to help stop the use of explosives and cyanide to catch fish.

Catching the fishermen in the act of illegal fishing is only half the problem however. The other half is trying to arrest disgruntled fishermen.

“When we tried to arrest them, the fishermen threw their bombs at us,” he said.
“It was very dangerous.”

Of course explosive are a ridiculous way to fish, but what other protein and cash sources do the fishermen have? Is stopping this practice negatively impacting the local diet reducing protein for the ares children???

If they keep blowing up the reefs there wont be any fish for anyone in the long run.

But Clive.. people eat in the short run… This is a recurrent problem I have seen in my conservation work.. Outside organizations requesting that people lower their standard of living in the short term for long term enviromental goals…. it never works. My research in Madagascar suggested that conservation goals can be achieved more easily when conservation is linked to improvements in the living standard.. in this case a health care program….

ok how can anybody ever think that dynamite fishing and cyanide fishing is morally right?? i just want to go and yell in their faces and make them feel so dang guilty because you guys are harming more than the killing of fish you are harming the ecosystem!! and its only kiling the earth even faster so when the world is coming to an end then i am going to go right up to you guys and just say now how do you feel being responsible for the end of the earth and the death of thousands thank you!

Don’t bother even trying to arrest the fisherman, do as Metallica say….”KILL ‘EM ALL”

Re: Ch-Ch-Cha-Changes

When conditions are right, 40 fish a day is lower range - at the right time you can easily get 75+ Thats Ontario though, don't expect that Nova Scotia!

40 FISH A DAY?!!...I'd be happy with 2 or 3, i can't wait 'till all my pennies are saved up and i come over to sample the fishing in your part of the world, sounds like an angler's paradise!

Gary is correct, the fishing up there is rarely not very good. This trip was from her first year up there and she probably caught an average of 40 fish a day or more. Believe it or not her favorite part was sitting in shallow water and casting her spoon trough the weeds for Pike. Her technique also got her the most walleye on the trip. I agree with ya Woody, nothing like spending the whole day on the water with no electronic toys to dull the day......well except for my portable fish finder. :)

Re: Rocket Fishing Rod

My daughter wants me to get her a rocket fishing rod for Christmas, even though I did teach her the same way I learned with good ole rod and reel. I have seen more cons then pros with this product, but I don't wanna break her little heart and tell her she's better off with the rod she has now. Any tips to make the news breaking easier for both me and her? Thanks.

Re: Stormy Kromer Hat Contest!

I'm not much for a pithy comment, but I thought I'd leave a note about how honored I be to wear Kromer on my upcoming annual pheasant hunting trip to South Dakota. I'm sure that my hunting buddies will joke about how silly I look while they wear their stylized broad brim hunting caps, but I'll be laughing on the inside as my head stays nice and warm. I'll be laughing al the more when the stiff South Dakota wind picks up and Kromer is staying put. Finally, with the fall bite on, I know my new Kromer will call the [...]
