At Fishing Fury, we love shiny things as much as fish do - especially shiny reels. As odd as it may sound, it’s not only important that our reels function well, but that they look great too. Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder when it comes to reels though. Personally I prefer the appearance of a round baitcast reel, where as Jon prefers low profile. One thing with both agree on though, is that if we had the money, we would have a serious collection of pimped out reels. Here’s a list of the reels we wish we had, but probably never will.

I know Jon previously wrote about the swarms giant jellyfish that invade the seas around Japan, but I found a few incredible photographs I though I’d share. These huge nomura’s jellyfish can grow up to 2m (6 ft 7 in) in diameter and weigh up to 200kgs (440 lbs). In the past year, numbers of these jelly fish have increased one hundred times. To reduce the numbers of these huge jellyfish the government of Japan has formed a committee. One solution: eat them.

Florida may be known as the Sunshine State, but to many it’s the Fishing Capitol of the World, and the statistics back up their claims. According to a 2001 “National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation”, Florida boasts a wide range of #1 ranked fishing related statistics. For instance, Florida is home to over 3.1 million anglers (#2 - California 2.4M) and not only do they spend over $2.5 billion dollars a year on equipment, but the overall retail sales are over $4 billion (4X the income from the state’s orange crop). That also means that half of the sales in Florida are from people visiting for the purpose of fishing.
The Florida Fishing Blog has more great statistics about Florida fishing and wildlife economy.
Three Mexican fishermen who spent nine months lost at sea, eating raw fish and sea birds, in a beaten fiberglass boat caught something they never dreamed of. Soon after their rescue, their story caught the ears of film-makers and the three men were offered a $3.8 million dollar deal to transform their story into a movie. The deal would give the Atlanta-based company an 8-year exclusive rights deal on merchandise, books, and film, but the deal hasn’t been completed.
“The $3.8 million, they said it could be double that. That is a base. That is still an initial agreement,” Aspericueta, part of a team of federal, state and municipal officials who led the negotiations on the fishermen’s behalf, told Reuters by telephone.
Here at FishingFury we love video games, especially fishing video games, and games with fishing mini-games like the up and coming Twilight Princess on the Nintendo Wii. For those of you that aren’t hip to the next generation of console gaming, the Wii uses a wireless motion-sensing remote, meaning you actually play the game by your actions and not just buttons. Check out the video to see what I mean.
Sure, there have been tons of rpg’s with fishing mini-games, just none so eloquent.
Scott Caldwell, of SC Guide Services, sent in another set of photos from his one of his recent trips. Unfortunatly, these didn’t come with a story like the last. But then again, the pictures do speak for themselves, and as a guide he does have to keep a few things secret.

Local fishermen on the outskirts of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, captured a 7.5-foot crocodile on Sunday. Crocodiles are not native to the Rio Grande and experts believe it was a pet, later released in the river by its owner. The 130 pound croc appeared to be young and in good condition when it was turned over to the local Animal Protection Society.

Re: Chasing Barracuda - Anegada, British Virgin Islands
Clive (29 months ago)Hey Peter, Spoons will catch you several varieties of fish including two of my favorite, barracuda and jacks. If you plan to fish for tarpon the best bet is using live bait and fishing at night. Tarpon can be found though out the Virgin Islands by day and night and you should be able to find them as long as you have good eyesight! (look for schools of baitfish and pelicans) Anegada probably holds some the best fishing in the BVI with a wide variety of species, including world class bone fishing. If you plan to fish from a boat you are [...]
