Chasing Barracuda – Anegada, BVI

Since the first time I saw a barracuda I have spent hours chasing them. I have caught several small barracuda, but despite great efforts I have been unable to catch one that exceeds five feet in length. Big barracuda are few and far between on the island of Tortola, but in Anegada, located north east of Tortola, large cudas can often be seen while taking long walks on the beach. My girlfriend Gillian and I decided to spent four days in Anegada of Christmas this year in hopes of catching some barracuda.

Since the barracuda around Tortola are almost certianly all carrying cigutera, they’re seldom pursued as a game fish. There are several large resident ‘cudas in outlaying bays that are quite used to people, and hover around certain regulat charter boats looking for a handout.
“Barry” over at Cooper Island, a 5′+ fish with an unusually dark colouration, is known for gulping back left-over chicken legs with aplomb, cruising around the snorkellers.

I have spotted one big cuda under the Queen Elizabeth bridge, probably 4-5 feet long. I have had it attack several lures, and had it break my line once. I hear there is a big one lurking in Josaiahs Bay aswell.

3 in a day isn’t common! We used to see dozens! There are very few over 5 feet left unfortunately.

From The Table of Adam Guy – “Madako”, Japanese Octopus

To catch such octopus, one employs a special tackle comprising a hooked, weighted wooden board about eight inches in length, to which a crab is tied, upside-down. Octopi apparently have a great weakness for crab, particularly those with their vulnerable underbelly exposed to attack. The baited device is lowered into the water using a thick nylon/polyester line, and then jigged up-and-down by hand on the seafloor. Octopus usually feel the bait with their tentacles before launching themselves onto it, and this can be felt in one's hands as a sort of 'sticking' feeling.
