OFN Invitational – Lake Nipissing, June 26-27 2004

OFN Invitational

It sounded like a great idea… A Pike tournament at Lake Nipissing hosted by Ontario Fishing Network and Lakair Lodge. Not to mention a chance to meet all of the great OFN’ers in person.

We contacted Lakair Lodge the day before the OFN Crayola Invitational pike tournament to make sure there was a place for us to stay. Luckily there was, so we got all of our gear together and headed out the next day. Neither Jon or myself had ever traveled so far north, but we looked forward to it with great anticipation. The drive was long, but the thoughts of unexpected adventures ahead helped pass the time.

Sadly I write what you already most certainly know. The uncontrolled illegal netting summer and winter that takes place in your most valuable resource has completely ruined the recreational walleye fishery! I have been coming to your area for a week twice a year for over thirty years with a group of 8 friends, but this past week will be my last trip to this area. The illegal netting, and as a consequence the concomitant stop of walleye stocking by 5 different groups has led to a complete and total disaster.

Your efforts to use the Lake Nipissing waterway as a development resource for the area will be difficult if not impossible — recreational fishing is gone.

Bon chance.

My First Marlin – by Rachel Larratt

Suddenly I heard the ZIP of the line and I watched as a small Dorado launched into the air. It was a beautiful sight but it didn’t last for long. Again the line went quiet. I started to feel a little sick to my stomach. The long swim and the heat out on the water started to get to me. At this point I’d begun to feel like we weren’t going to catch anything so I went into the cabin to have a short nap in the air conditioning. The gentle rock of the boat almost lulled me to sleep. From inside the cabin I heard that sound. ZIP!! I jumped off the bunk bed and ran outside. I waited for a second before getting my hopes up and then I saw the marlin jump into the air. It was an amazing rush!
