At Fishing Fury, we love shiny things as much as fish do - especially shiny reels. As odd as it may sound, it’s not only important that our reels function well, but that they look great too. Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder when it comes to reels though. Personally I prefer the appearance of a round baitcast reel, where as Jon prefers low profile. One thing with both agree on though, is that if we had the money, we would have a serious collection of pimped out reels. Here’s a list of the reels we wish we had, but probably never will.
This morning I found this awesome email, complete with photos from a local fan who has just started getting in to musky fishing on Lake Scugog.

I want to thank the guys at fishingfury.com for putting up such a great web site. It’s the best site around for the everyday angler. You posted pictures of muskie caught on Lake Scugog, and found it helpful since you can see what area of Scugog the muskie were caught. I never caught a muskie before last year and have been fishing all of my life, but this would probably be due to being intimidated by all the jargon that’s around on the web as well as magazines. It always seemed to me that the allusive muskie was a fish extremely hard to catch, but after these past few summers, have come to the conclusion that it seems to be all in the anglers head. It wasn’t until this summer, that I really put in a lot of work to find the holding locations for the fish as well as the proper techniques to land them. I have had the privileged of taking many people out this summer, and seen the many smiles on their faces when they hook into their first ever muskie, but like we know, it won’t be their last.
For some reason, it’s very addictive, and have not pursued any other species of game fish since landing my first decent sized one. On average, I have been lucky to land approximately 3-4 muskie a day when out fishing, with some larger bass taking the bait as well. I wish that the popular magazines out there dealing with the angling world, would take the time to let the readers know that this game species is not as hard to find and catch as is led to believe. It’s more about the angler getting over the intimidation, than it is finding ways to bring them into the boat. I hope that someday I will see fishing fury on TV and wish your team the best of luck getting there. Keep up the good work. I have also sent some pictures along with this email, because I know, your team having a love of fishing, can appreciate the excitement and beauty of landing muskie.
As you can see, Mike definitely knows where to find the musky on Lake Scugog, but I think he’s still working on his holding technique..
Thank you very much for the email and photos Mike, I will get in touch with you soon and maybe we can head out for a day on Scugog in search of muskie. I have yet to catch a musky on Scugog in fact, so you’d be doing me a great favor, hah!
Our new contributor Matt Barnette submitted these great photos from the ICAST 2007 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. I’ve included a few of my favorites in this post, the rest are located in the ICAST Photo Gallery.
So you may remember the recent rod repair I performed on a Pete Mania Musky Rod from Bass Pro Shops. Well about a week before leaving for Little Vermilion, I was at a friends house watching TV (I don’t own a TV) and I saw a musky guide put his hook through what looked like a hole in the trigger. At that point I understood what the hole was for, but still given all the rods on display with broken triggers and how much my rods got beaten around in the car and on the boat I was glad I filled it. I knew there had to be a better way to do this, without sacrificing any performance.
Sure enough, while packing my things for the trip it came to me. A hook ring that thats customizable in both strength, size, and thickness, as well as cheap, replaceable, and has no performance drawbacks. Don’t lose site now, this isn’t an infomercial, and I won’t be selling you anything.
All you need are two zip ties! You’ll also want to make sure you can still remove the reel from it’s seat while the zip ties are on, depending on your configuration, smaller or thinner zip ties maybe in order. While your at it toss a few in your tackle box for later.
So maybe instead of a person or machine in a factory drilling holes in your perfectly molded and crafted trigger, that will likely break because of it, just toss in a couple zip ties.
Thanks to the mysterious anglingarcher for pointing out the mix-up in my original post, and mostly for reminding me to get this posted. I still have a lot of back logs to go through, as well as a pile of real work to do, more interesting updates are on their way!
About a week ago I spent a week in Maui, one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever had the enjoyment of visiting. Unfortunately I did not have any time for fishing, I spent the majority of my time surfing, I did manage to visit the Maui Ocean Center in my spare time and last night put together this video.

Hey Peter,
Spoons will catch you several varieties of fish including two of my favorite, barracuda and jacks. If you plan to fish for tarpon the best bet is using live bait and fishing at night. Tarpon can be found though out the Virgin Islands by day and night and you should be able to find them as long as you have good eyesight! (look for schools of baitfish and pelicans)
Anegada probably holds some the best fishing in the BVI with a wide variety of species, including world class bone fishing.
