Pimp My Reel - Dream Reels

At Fishing Fury, we love shiny things as much as fish do - especially shiny reels. As odd as it may sound, it’s not only important that our reels function well, but that they look great too. Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder when it comes to reels though. Personally I prefer the appearance of a round baitcast reel, where as Jon prefers low profile. One thing with both agree on though, is that if we had the money, we would have a serious collection of pimped out reels. Here’s a list of the reels we wish we had, but probably never will.

Mystery Pike

During my many wasted hours of reading up on pike fishing, I stumbled across a photo of another monsterous pike on a Netherlands fishing site. I wanted to know more about the big fish, but the entire site was of course in Dutch. After translating the text with Babel Fish (ofcourse), I was able to determine that this fish is a mystery fish, its size and weight unknown. Rumour has it the fish is from Italy, which would make it the second huge pike we have seen from the boot shaped country. I guess there is more to Italy then soccer, pasta and super cars afterall.

If you have an details on this photo, please let us know.

Huge Italian pike?

On the topic of mystery pike, I’d love to know details about the other Italian pike too…

Drunk Pike

This one should be filed under What Not to do With Your Fish. Apparently these guys from Poland thought it would be a good idea to give an under-aged pike some alcohol. Apart from the pike being underage, there is some kind of law about cruelty to animals. Maybe this is where the term Drunk as a Fish comes from. PETA is investigating the case, but rumor has it that these guys are with PETA.

Drunk pike

I can’t help but wonder if that would make a pike taste better.

Fishing Knuckles!

Gadgetgirl sent along a link for this great fishing product created by artist Chrissy Angliker. I’m not sure how much line the Fishing Knuckles can hold, but it appears to be more then enough to handle all sorts of fish. The Knuckles come in several colours, so they are not only useful, but fashionable.

Chrissy appears to be a fan of fishing, in addition to Fishing Knuckles, she has a section on her page called Badass Fishing. Sounds like our kinda girl! I’d love to get my hands on these, but they are only available in Brooklyn, New York according to the site. If you live in Brooklyn, check out The future Perfect to pick yourself up a set of knuckles and get us a pair while you are at it!

Save a fish, buy an SFD™

My friend Yuri sent me this link the other day with a handy little tool almost every fisherman can use. It isn’t often that we come across new innovative fishing products that not only encourage catch and release, but help fish survive an encounter with a fisherman. For those who don t fish often, a common problem with pulling certain fish out of deep water too quickly is a bloated bladder. When this bladder fills with air, the fish will not be able to descend back into its depths, and as a result it will often die. So how can this be problem be solved? With a piece of wire of course!

SFD

The SFD™ is a simple device used to decend fish with bloated air bladder back down greater than 30 feet to allow the water pressure to recompress fish’s air-bladder. For all species including rockfish, walleye, black bass, lake trout, groupers and all species that suffer barotrauma.

World Record Alligator Gar

There are a handful of fish I really want to catch before I die. To be added to this list, the fish have to either look really amazing, fight really well, or are just be incredibly large. The alligator is all of the above. These mean loooking fish are found in the south eastern United States and can grow up to 12 feet long. These fish have been known to attack alligators and humans in rare cases. The rod and reel world record has stood since 1951, caught by Bill Valverde, weighing in at 279lbs and was caught in the Rio Grande, Texas. I wasnt able to find pictures of the fish but I thought I would share these photos of what looks to be an alligator gar well over 200lbs, one site has it listed as 244lbs. This gar was caught bow fishing and is the biggest one I could find a picture of.

Catching Catfish with Car Tires

Catfish fishermen have go to be the most inventive fishermen on the planet. Now people are using car tires catch fish! I guess when your front yard is filled with nothing but broken down cars you find ways to use the parts…sometimes I wish I lived in the south. Really. No not really.

“Here in South Carolina we fish the easy way, with old car tires. Close up the inside, cut a hole and throw them in the lake. If you are wondering, Abby is a dog that was in the boat with Granddaddy. You’ll hear her name called.”

Re: Chasing Barracuda - Anegada, British Virgin Islands

Hey Peter, Spoons will catch you several varieties of fish including two of my favorite, barracuda and jacks. If you plan to fish for tarpon the best bet is using live bait and fishing at night. Tarpon can be found though out the Virgin Islands by day and night and you should be able to find them as long as you have good eyesight! (look for schools of baitfish and pelicans) Anegada probably holds some the best fishing in the BVI with a wide variety of species, including world class bone fishing. If you plan to fish from a boat you are [...]
