At Fishing Fury, we love shiny things as much as fish do - especially shiny reels. As odd as it may sound, it’s not only important that our reels function well, but that they look great too. Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder when it comes to reels though. Personally I prefer the appearance of a round baitcast reel, where as Jon prefers low profile. One thing with both agree on though, is that if we had the money, we would have a serious collection of pimped out reels. Here’s a list of the reels we wish we had, but probably never will.
Last week we mentioned that the beautiful Quantum Tour Edition PT was/is on sale for $110 off the regular price, and now we’re going to tell you why. Because its old and busted! The good folks at Tackle Tour have photos of the all new 2009 Tour Edition PT which will hit stores this fall. The new reel looks to be aimed toward the fishing enthusiast, boasting great detail and a carbon fiber handle (and no doubt a hefty price tag). It’s a sharp looking reel no doubt, but personally I prefer the colour of the old model. Have a look for yourself.

We’re big fans of Quantum reels here at Fishing Fury, and the 2009 line looks very promising. Hopefully we can get our hands on some of these quality reels to test out!
Last week I did an interview with Bryn Weese (left) of the Toronto Sun about TTC accessible fishing spots around Toronto. Turns out that Bryn is an avid fisherman himself and we ended up talking about much more than could fit in the article.
Jonathan Marshall [sic] and Clive Mathias, creators of the website fishingfury.com, are both experienced anglers who make it their business to fish in the city and tell people where — and how — to do it.
If their website is any indication, not only are there huge fish, particularly pike, to be caught around Toronto, but there is also a thriving angling community here.
Like many Torontonians, Marshall doesn’t own a car and uses the TTC to get to his fishing spots.
“I’m pretty much stuck in the area, but that’s okay,” he said, noting he heads over to Toronto Islands for pike fishing after work.
“The pike opportunities on Toronto Islands during the last week of May is probably the best fishing in Toronto I’ve ever had,” he said, noting the evening hours from 5 to 9 are probably the best times.
His secret? Large inline spinners, like a Mepps Black Fury 5, casted in and around weedbeds with a medium or medium-heavy spinning rod.
“Pretty much anywhere you see a weed bed is the perfect place to go,” he said, noting the centre channel on Centre Island is probably the best spot of all.
Also try the water near the amphitheatre on Centre Island if the boat traffic isn’t too busy.
In addition to pike and bass, anglers can also catch panfish, carp, trout and salmon (seasonally) from the shores of the islands. Marshall said he even once caught a walleye there.
It’s a great article and I’m very happy that I was interviewed! Don’t forget that next weekend is the National Fishing Week, which means you do not need a license to fish that weekend but you must follow the conservation license rules. There are also family fishing activities all over the GTA and across Canada.
Bryn if you’re ever in need of a fishing partner let me know, I’m more than willing to meet you some where on the TTC or even split those extremely high gas prices!

I’ve always wanted to live on a property with a lake, pond or river. To be able to walk into your yard and fish would be a dream come true. My friend Yuri recently started a new job that has him living on a beautiful property that not only has a pond, but three ponds. Not only three ponds, but three ponds full of largemouth bass. We were chatting online just now and he disappeared for 5 minutes then sent me an email with titled, “Fish I caught while chatting with you.”
Lucky sob, even if it was a small one. (side note: while the fish may appear to be small, it isn’t, Yuri’s hand is as big as a baseball glove. Seriously.)
I’ve had an old fly fishing setup lying around for a couple months collecting dust. I’ve been out fishing several times, but never for more then an hour or two, so I didn’t bother bringing the fly gear. This morning I got up super early just so I’d have an extra hour or two on the water and figure it was the perfect time to try something new.
Let me start by saying this: Fly fishing is not as easy as it looks.
I’m not entirely sure what I was doing wrong, but my fly wouldn’t go any further then 20 feet. Before I head out again I plan to watch a few videos on youtube to sort things out. I think my biggest problem is that I was moving my arm too much. I didn’t catch any fish on the fly, but I did manage to get about 10 small bass on my spinner baits. I spent half the Morning at Albro Lake, and the second half at Lake Micmac.
Blah my stomach is turning. I couldn't imagine our lakes turning to this but it is a possibility.
I vote this most disturbing Fishing Fury post of all time!
Just when i thought the subject had finished, someone has brought it back up again, this has got to be the most talked about picture yet!...I bet the poor bloke who sent the pic in wishes he hadn't bothered!...Pike eh?...They're nothing but trouble!

The thing with this pike that I'm still having trouble with is not so much the three finger thing, but rather the girth of the fish. I've seen lots of pike up close and personal as well as photos of some monster pike but none had that type of girth.
It would seem to me that if you compare the size of that pike relative to the man holding it that pike should weight 100 lbs because it's at least half the size of the guy. The fish's head is bigger than his and the rest of the [...]

I laughed, so true. It can be so much fun to take people out fishing. Ans I also find what you have written to hold very true for children as well. If kids are taken fishing, dont "make" them fish, dont make fun of them, be patient and let them develop their own reason for enjoying fishing.
I have taken girlfriends, kids, brothers and friends fishing. Patience is the key in my opinion.
There are more guys like him out there. Just check out any rivers edge, you'll see us.
