World Record Sunfish (Redear)

We don’t talk much about panfish on Fishing Fury and I’m not sure why. We have definitely been caught up in the excitement of pike and musky fishing in the last four years, but we began fishing as most did, catching little sunfish and bluegil. When finding fish in new locations is slow, I know I can fall back on catching the usually overlooked panfish.

Usually the lures we use are bigger then most panfish, but then again, I had never caught a five pound sunfish before!

Redear sunfish world record
The all-tackle world record redear sunfish was caught by Amos M. Gayfrom in 1998. The massive panfish was caught in the Santee Cooper Diversional Canal, South Carolina USA, and weighed 5 pounds, 7.5 ounces.

What a great FAT PORKER! That’s hell of a lump to pull out, it’d take a good size Pike to take that in one greedy gulp, Mark

Woody on March 19th, 2008 @ 2:53 pm

And apparently it’s not the first 5+ pounder pulled the that location!

Re: Ch-Ch-Cha-Changes

Gary is correct, the fishing up there is rarely not very good. This trip was from her first year up there and she probably caught an average of 40 fish a day or more. Believe it or not her favorite part was sitting in shallow water and casting her spoon trough the weeds for Pike. Her technique also got her the most walleye on the trip. I agree with ya Woody, nothing like spending the whole day on the water with no electronic toys to dull the day......well except for my portable fish finder. :)

Re: Rocket Fishing Rod

My daughter wants me to get her a rocket fishing rod for Christmas, even though I did teach her the same way I learned with good ole rod and reel. I have seen more cons then pros with this product, but I don't wanna break her little heart and tell her she's better off with the rod she has now. Any tips to make the news breaking easier for both me and her? Thanks.

Re: Stormy Kromer Hat Contest!

I'm not much for a pithy comment, but I thought I'd leave a note about how honored I be to wear Kromer on my upcoming annual pheasant hunting trip to South Dakota. I'm sure that my hunting buddies will joke about how silly I look while they wear their stylized broad brim hunting caps, but I'll be laughing on the inside as my head stays nice and warm. I'll be laughing al the more when the stiff South Dakota wind picks up and Kromer is staying put. Finally, with the fall bite on, I know my new Kromer will call the [...]
