We don’t talk much about panfish on Fishing Fury and I’m not sure why. We have definitely been caught up in the excitement of pike and musky fishing in the last four years, but we began fishing as most did, catching little sunfish and bluegil. When finding fish in new locations is slow, I know I can fall back on catching the usually overlooked panfish.
Usually the lures we use are bigger then most panfish, but then again, I had never caught a five pound sunfish before!

The all-tackle world record redear sunfish was caught by Amos M. Gayfrom in 1998. The massive panfish was caught in the Santee Cooper Diversional Canal, South Carolina USA, and weighed 5 pounds, 7.5 ounces.

What a great FAT PORKER! That’s hell of a lump to pull out, it’d take a good size Pike to take that in one greedy gulp, Mark
And apparently it’s not the first 5+ pounder pulled the that location!
can I have the picture and how long it took to get it in and what you were using and maybe a nice picture of the place you caught it and the city and state and the lake and maybe a brief comment like you were fishing for bass or you were actually fishing for red ear and if you eat the fish how do you clean it?

Hey, how long was that fish? I caught one that was 13.5 inches long and 10 inches tall. didnt weight it, just let it go…
I was there in Santee Cooper fishing with my grandpa when this fish was caught. We came in from fishing the very same canal to a crowd and the buzz about the big shell cracker as they call them. I remember he said he thought he had hooked into the gator that was patrolling the area or a giant catfish. I have a picture stashed away somewhere of him carrying the fish to get officially weighed.
Tony, I believe he was using leeches. The canal if my memory serves me correctly was about 4o yds across. It had rained the day before all day and it was harsh harsh weather. The water was pretty stained. The storm was producing 4 ft waves on the lake with 70 mph winds. Next few days was solid fishing
wow, great catch, thats a keeper for sure….. but seriously, tony, lay of the preaching, take your god loving to sunday masses…. Thor forever.
