In North America, most people don’t like carp fishing. The don’t like carp in general. European and Asian carp have been introduced to our waters and have thrived. Personally, I like carp and carp fishing – but not as much as this guy.

What do you think of carp – Love em or hate em?

I’m a fairly new fisherman, so take my comments with a grain of salt. I was at my local pond, when suddenly five massive koi came swimming around, and my first, basic, instinctual reaction was, “Damn, I want to punch those fish in the face.”
They are an invasive species that do nothing but damage our eco-system, but they aren’t half as bad as what gets brought over in balast tanks on big ships.
They are here to stay so if you like a fight similar to hooking into a freight train, get out your hair rigs and bolies and get fishing!
I don’t know what kind of Carp that is, we don’t get them in England. Do you have hair rigs and Boilies in Canada as well? I thought all your fish only went for things that wriggled about!
I think its a carp from Thailand.
Some people here use hair rigs and boiles, I usually use plain old corn though.
I do prefer catching fish that chase lures, but carp put up a great fight!
The European species are quite harmless even in Northern America. They can survive even in the colder environment but the young fish grow too slow and most of them are being eaten by predatory fish fairly quickly. It’s the same in most part of western europe. These fish can get older than your grandma and their intelligence is unbelievable. Since fishing for carp became more popular they have found their own ways to elude the hookbaits. Some of them have become impossible to catch. To catch a fish that was already swimming in the same waters 50 years ago is such a thrill. Us western european carp fishermen treat them with the respect you’d have for the wise and/or the elderly, catch and release.
I’m suspecting that the Asian species however is much more invasive, has less difficulties to breed and make life hard on the native wildlife much like the snakehead.
I’m planning to do some carpfishing in Canada when I’m there in September. I’ll be in the Trenton/Belleville area so if anyone knows any good spots for static carpfishing, let me know :-)
The Asian carp haven’t invaded Canada yet, but they have created all sorts of problems in the USA.
Hey Sander, if you want some tips on fishing in the Trenton/Belleville area, checkout http://www.ofncommunity.com

hi folks
The disease that affected them carp in Northern America was called KHV VIRUS. It is a relatively newly discovered virus and is connected to global warming and remained dormant for years, however the change in annual climate cycles has resulted in many odd diseases throughout the world. Likewise this KHV virus is worldwide, first recorded in asia, it only affects the carp family of fish.
The main sign to look out for when fishing to see if KHV present in your carp is around the gills, bleeding (not due to capture)and at later stages the gills nolonger appear bright red they turn a pale off yellow colour. Thats the gills dying and slowly it stops the carp breathing in the oxygen from the water and the fish dies.
That said the Carp is a very intelligent freshwater species. They are quick learners and once caught by rod and line in infancy they prove a challenge once matured. Fishermen sit and camp out for days and nights across Europe in hope to catch the biggest one in the lake.
It is a battle of wit for man against nature, while both fisherman AND Carp are learning all the time!
Thanks for the info Tony, I’ll bet you’re a carp hunter aren’t you!
hi Jonathon
Yeah – I love the sport, you can be sat there all nice and quiet, then out of the blue all hell breaks loose and you rod is bent over double.
I have just registered with this forum, I live in England – Mancheser. I have to travel for good Carp fishing.
Hi Tony, i’m from Leicester and we’ve got got Carp Lakes within 10 minutes in 3 different directions, spoilt for choice!
i love fishing ive only cauht one carp in my life , i thought it was a trout at first because i was useing power bait, but it turned out to be a 18 pound carp, i was scared of it a first, now i just want to fight more carp, hansen dam lake view terrace Ca, lots of fish there you just need your gear a time you catch a fatty (night fishing is better)
Carp fishing is a lot of fun for the fight. I’m not the type of fisherman to use the sit and wait method, jigging near dams for them is where its at.
tony bass trout carp cats? hilarious name.. keep up the good work.
I didn’t think much of the carp for a long time but then I fluked into one with the ‘old hook and worm’. It gave me one hell of a fight and bent my net in half from the weight alone (Note: it wasn’t a big game net). I’ve been thinking and reading about them ever since. I’ve also watched a ridiculous amount of British carp fishing videos trying to figure out the best methods of catching them. If one could figure out how to catch them consistently the Toronto harbor is filthy with them. I spent all summer last year trying to figure them out, but I’ve found they are pretty sharp fish. I’d be sitting there for hours while 20-30 monsters cruised the waters all around me not giving a #@$t about my bait. It was frustrating and awe inspiring
Whoa what happened there?
Dunno, fixed for you though!
I fish the thames river in london ON. I use bread all the way and hang on for the ride. typically a 5-15min fight reeling one in properly(without ripping its face apart). bread is tricky because it is a pain to cast but ive developed a method of squeezing it on tight and i could get my line pretty far out. just sit and wait, bread is usually hard to cast the second time, but its not a bad thing losing your bread in the water. it seems to me it is only after chumming the water for about an hour that the carp really start bitting good.
I used to fish there too londoner – corn always worked for me!
londoner
Are you working that bread on the surface or working it on the bottom? I’ve heard word that bagels make a pretty good surface carp bait because the bagel skin is tough and holds on the hook well. I havn’t tried it yet. Are you chumming the water with more bread or something else?
I’ve put together some of the tastiest smelling chums one could imagine. And one drunken night I made boilies that smelled so tastey that I had to eat one. It didn’t taste as tastey as it smelled. Ha. No luck on them though.
I have tried corn once or twice, no luck yet.
I’ve even gone so far as to score some British style method feeders and shotgun feeders that I have yet to use.
But I’m planning big for this summer.
Yea I am working it on the bottom. How I found out about chumming the water( with bread) is by losing so many of my chunks of bread while reeling in or freeing snags. So now I just smoosh some bread around pebbles and chuck em in the water and sooner or later the carp show up. then go with three heavy split shots and a good clump of bread and it works for me. the other day me and a bud of mine got three decent sized carp in about 20 minutes. thats a workout. As far as british methods go i find it alot of work when bread seems to work fine. ive got a couple good spots where its pretty much a sure thing.
I was reading my 2010 ontario fishing guide and it says to destroy grass carp, and a few other species.
I was wondering what kind of carp are in the Thames River in london so I know.
Personally I’ve only seen common carp in the Thames – but that doenst mean there are other kinds around. Technically any carp species would be concidered invasive, but the is no law about killing common carp.

Visit Canada every year carp fishing.Visit Trenton a couple of times during my visit would be grateful for any info on good fishing spots for carp in the Trenton area and around the village of Buckhorn.
Hope Somebody responds
