Bill Valverde’s World Record Alligator Gar

I posted about the world record alligator gar sometime ago, but was unable to locate a photo of the enormous fish. Luckily one of our readers knew just were to find one

Without further ado, here is a photo of the late, great Bill Valverde’s world record 279 pound alligator gar caught in 1951.

My uncle is Bill Valverde and we have an old pic of him and my grandfather with the gar. I’ll get it scanned and emailed to you if you would like. I’m kinda shocked no one in the family has contributed the photo anywhere on the to be seen on the net.

Thanks Dan!

Wow simply awesome. I can’t even imagine what that fight must have been like. Imagine the rush of catching a fish that big!

Love the oldschool baitcaster he is holding too.

Thanks for sharing the photo Dan

hey your uncle is the old school fisherman for alligator gar. I am too. it looks like he is holding a penn 309 reel. old school reel. the best reels are the old reels. and the rod he is holding is a one piece solid fiberglass rod or at least it appears that way. I have a bunch of those rods that I buy and collect. I also fish for alligator gar and have yet to catch one like the one your uncle is holding. congrats. by the way I also live in the rio grande valley, believe your uncle caught him on the rio grande river. well let me tell you there are a whole bunch of those in the river. the problem is reeling them in hahaha!

Re: Ch-Ch-Cha-Changes

When conditions are right, 40 fish a day is lower range - at the right time you can easily get 75+ Thats Ontario though, don't expect that Nova Scotia!

40 FISH A DAY?!!...I'd be happy with 2 or 3, i can't wait 'till all my pennies are saved up and i come over to sample the fishing in your part of the world, sounds like an angler's paradise!

Gary is correct, the fishing up there is rarely not very good. This trip was from her first year up there and she probably caught an average of 40 fish a day or more. Believe it or not her favorite part was sitting in shallow water and casting her spoon trough the weeds for Pike. Her technique also got her the most walleye on the trip. I agree with ya Woody, nothing like spending the whole day on the water with no electronic toys to dull the day......well except for my portable fish finder. :)

well woody there are never any bad days while fishing in canada. probably my favorite place in the world to go fishing and get away from the rat race!

Re: Rocket Fishing Rod

My daughter wants me to get her a rocket fishing rod for Christmas, even though I did teach her the same way I learned with good ole rod and reel. I have seen more cons then pros with this product, but I don't wanna break her little heart and tell her she's better off with the rod she has now. Any tips to make the news breaking easier for both me and her? Thanks.

I worked so hard this weekend, the shirt fell right offen me, so I need that shirt more than ANYONE else! Love your site!

Re: Stormy Kromer Hat Contest!

I'm not much for a pithy comment, but I thought I'd leave a note about how honored I be to wear Kromer on my upcoming annual pheasant hunting trip to South Dakota. I'm sure that my hunting buddies will joke about how silly I look while they wear their stylized broad brim hunting caps, but I'll be laughing on the inside as my head stays nice and warm. I'll be laughing al the more when the stiff South Dakota wind picks up and Kromer is staying put. Finally, with the fall bite on, I know my new Kromer will call the [...]
