My First Time Fly Fishing!

I’ve had an old fly fishing setup lying around for a couple months collecting dust. I’ve been out fishing several times, but never for more then an hour or two, so I didn’t bother bringing the fly gear. This morning I got up super early just so I’d have an extra hour or two on the water and figure it was the perfect time to try something new.

Let me start by saying this: Fly fishing is not as easy as it looks.

I’m not entirely sure what I was doing wrong, but my fly wouldn’t go any further then 20 feet. Before I head out again I plan to watch a few videos on youtube to sort things out. I think my biggest problem is that I was moving my arm too much. I didn’t catch any fish on the fly, but I did manage to get about 10 small bass on my spinner baits. I spent half the Morning at Albro Lake, and the second half at Lake Micmac.

Awesome, I’d love to try some fly fishing I just can’t afford it right now. What’s your setup?

Jonathon Marshall on June 28th, 2008 @ 7:48 pm

I’m using a rod and reel older then me.

Clive Mathias on June 28th, 2008 @ 8:07 pm

How many times did you hook yourself?? I think I hooked the back of my shirt 10 times my first time out. I then practiced casting in the school yard across the way with just a tippet on, no fly. If you aren’t getting very far on a cast then the rod is not loading , I think. Not an expert by any means yet but I can get tightloops at this point.

Keep at it bro it only gets better!

Interesting photo sequence of your first fly fishing trip.

Great to see a place I recognize too.

The art of fly casting really comes down to timing and as you pointed out “loading the rod”. I guess like anything a bit of practise helps too.

Cheers,
Steve

Are you ‘hooked’? I fell in the Ottawa river my first time. Waders filled up on my, too! But since I became interested in fly fishing just 2 years ago, I have been many times and tied over a thousand of my own flies!
Even tying musky spinner baits!

I’m in for life now, just gotta save pennies for a new setup! I’ve made three flies already too!

Wow great pics, I wish I looked as composed as yourself my first time Fly Fishing. Iam sorry to say I made a bit of a fool of myself the first time. But after reading some books and watching a ton of fly fishing videos I had improved my form.
Some Fly Fishing lesson on Video here!!

I hope the above link helps anyone wanting to learn!

Cheers from Cairns Australia

Re: Ch-Ch-Cha-Changes

When conditions are right, 40 fish a day is lower range - at the right time you can easily get 75+ Thats Ontario though, don't expect that Nova Scotia!

40 FISH A DAY?!!...I'd be happy with 2 or 3, i can't wait 'till all my pennies are saved up and i come over to sample the fishing in your part of the world, sounds like an angler's paradise!

Gary is correct, the fishing up there is rarely not very good. This trip was from her first year up there and she probably caught an average of 40 fish a day or more. Believe it or not her favorite part was sitting in shallow water and casting her spoon trough the weeds for Pike. Her technique also got her the most walleye on the trip. I agree with ya Woody, nothing like spending the whole day on the water with no electronic toys to dull the day......well except for my portable fish finder. :)

well woody there are never any bad days while fishing in canada. probably my favorite place in the world to go fishing and get away from the rat race!

Re: Rocket Fishing Rod

My daughter wants me to get her a rocket fishing rod for Christmas, even though I did teach her the same way I learned with good ole rod and reel. I have seen more cons then pros with this product, but I don't wanna break her little heart and tell her she's better off with the rod she has now. Any tips to make the news breaking easier for both me and her? Thanks.

Re: Stormy Kromer Hat Contest!

I'm not much for a pithy comment, but I thought I'd leave a note about how honored I be to wear Kromer on my upcoming annual pheasant hunting trip to South Dakota. I'm sure that my hunting buddies will joke about how silly I look while they wear their stylized broad brim hunting caps, but I'll be laughing on the inside as my head stays nice and warm. I'll be laughing al the more when the stiff South Dakota wind picks up and Kromer is staying put. Finally, with the fall bite on, I know my new Kromer will call the [...]
