Pike Season Is Here!

Saturday May 2nd marks the first day of pike season in select areas of Ontario. Luckily for me, one of those areas happens to be nearby the place I’m visiting, so if all goes well, I’ll be reporting about some slimy green monsters by this time tomorrow. Every fisherman has their favorite go to lure for pike, and some will tell you it doesn’t matter what you use, you get them. Sometimes pike fishing really is that easy, but the high pressure pike of Toronto Islands cant be tricked by just any lure. Several years ago, when Jon and I first started fishing in Toronto we had enormous luck on Mepps spinner baits, and as far as I’m concerned, you cant get a better early season pike lure off the shelf. People will tell you you need something to fish slower for those inactive pike, but if you use a spinner as much as I do, you know they can be fished at any speed.

I know a lot of our readers will be out tomorrow, so good luck! I’ll be carrying plenty of Fishing Fury stickers with me, so feel free to come and talk to me if you see me, and I can hook you up. I don’t have a proper pike rod with me, but I’ll be attempting to cast out my very own Rockstar Lures that were specifically designed for Toronto Islands pike. Not only are they larger then your average spinner bait, but they are an ideal weight for shore casting the canals throughout the islands.

Heres a shot of an average Toronto pike I caught back in 2006, the last time I had fished the islands heavily.

Went out today in Montreal. Windy but ok in the bays. Caught about 15 fish. Threw out only Williams large spoons(COPPER AND SILVER) and caught 2 Walleye and a whack of pike(3-5lbs)-no hammer handles. Awesome to be back on the water. Hit 2 bass but who would have thought they’d latch onto a large warbler spoon. All fish released

saw alot of people out yesterday !

both boats and shore , everyone was out to get on some monsters …

From what I experienced yesterday , there are some SERIOUS bruisers in the area !

Some of the follows that came our way were amazing , your jaw drops when you see the shadow of this massive fish inches away from your bait …. I’m sure there will be a post , definetly planning to get out once again to this incredible fishery …

anyone have some stories to share for those who came out ?

I went out to the island on may 2nd and it was a blast…took my bud who has never fished pike before..while using one of my number 10 clowns…he scored a 4 kilo pike and it was close to 30″…he was so happy….next time..bringing camera for sure..

Found that they love the black mepp..number 5 as well….we had a few more pike that day but a gentleman next to us..was five for five and his biggest was almost 40 inchs…..it was a fun day.

Our pike season doesn’t open until Friday (May 15). All of your stories are getting me pumped for camping at Norcan Lake this weekend. It is a pretty secluded lake about 1.5 hrs from Ottawa with a lot of Crown Land for free camping. I can’t wait to start landing em’ again. We have a lot of early season luck on orange, brook trout pattern husky jerks or simple gold spoons at this lake. I am going to have to try some spinners up there, haven’t really tried them spring fishing.
