New Wels Catfish World Record

I love reading about new world records, especially when its a freshwater fish that exceeds 250 pounds! This enormous wels catfish is nearly 8 pounds more then the current world record!

Guided by IGFA Certified Captain Alberto Bartoli and using shrimp forbait, Roberto Godi of Arcole Veroma, Italy landed a potential IGFA All-Tackle record after catching a wels (Silurus glanis) on February 5. The giant fish weighed 113.5 kg (250 lb 3 oz) which Godi caught while fishing Italy’s River Po. He said the fish fought for 45 minutes before he was able to pull it to shore onto a smooth surfaced mat where it was weighed, photographed and released alive. The current IGFA record is 242 lb 8 oz (110 kg) caught February 2009 also from the River Po.

World’s biggest catfish, or world’s smallest angler?

    The truth is out there.

Now that’s one big fish!  It’s great that those guys take such care to make sure that the fish lives to fight another day.

Catfishcapers.com is the place to have a look at Cats…The river Ebro in Spain is one of the best rivers for these big beasts, if you go there with them and you don’t catch a cat that’s at least 100lbs in weight, they give you a free return trip! Being in Europe it’s dirt cheap for me and will be going when there is enough of us to make it worthwhile.

These “record” catty’s are all different. And none seem to have the 3, very painful, spines that our squeaking, grunting bastards have. We have shovel-nosed fork-tailed, golden fork-tailed, fresh water eel-tailed (cobbler) & estuarine eel-tailed (cobbler). All have 3 sharp spines. The first three can be found in both fresh or salt water. The estuarine cobbler are tops for food. Second comes the golden catty. After 3 meals of the shovel nose, one stops fishing for 6 months. The latter is sold locally as Kununurra silver cobbler. A bit like Bassa. The slow growing variety is great. The other. Well. No comment needed. Give us some words of wisdom on “your”catfish. Like those from downstream Mississippi. Cheers
