Where Do You Buy Your Catfish?

I don’t eat fish too often, but one of my favorites is catfish. We used to catch them a lot when I was about six years old and we’d eat them within an hour of catching them. I’ve never bought catfish from a supermarket, and after seeing this video I’m not sure I ever will. Despite healthy populations of catfish across the United States, a lot of catfish are actually imported from outside countries like Vietnam. Now this would be OK if other countries followed the same food safety regulations we do, but they don’t.

It’s a shame because the farm raised catfish from the US is one of the more sustainable forms of auqaculture.  Still, 80 of our seafood comes for other countries.  Think about that next time you’re enjoying a shrimp cocktail.

After living in Mexico for over a year and eating fresh fish it’s nearly impossibly for me to purchase it from a store or restaurant. When I say fresh I’m talking only a few hours after being caught- heck I ate raw meat from a yellowfin tuna only minutes after being caught! I can now tell the difference in fish that’s been frozen and fish that hasn’t been. Mexico spoiled me and now I can only eat fish I catch and clean myself.

Being a fisherman I never really consider purchasing fish from a market.  I primarily catch and release but if I anticipate or plan a meal consisting of fish then I have no problems harvesting a salmon here and there.
    Thanks for the post.
