Egg Timer Time Lapse Video

Every now and then I stumble upon and idea that is so simple and so awesome I can’t believe I didn’t come up with it myself. When this type of situation arises, I find the best thing to do is steal the idea, make it your own, and show off to all of your friends and family. This little camera trick is remarkably easy to achieve. Check it out!

If you are a handyman, you probably have everything you’ll need already. If not, all the parts you need will cost no more then $5-10 (assuming you have a digital camera capable of time-lapse photography). You will need:

  • A 1/4″ bolt
  • Super Glue
  • An egg timer
  • There is not much to it. I glued a bolt to the top of the egg timer, and a nut to the bottom to attach a tripod. Thats it. Seriously. Here’s another sample video.

There are several other ways to combine an egg timer with your camera, but this was the quickest and cheapest way for me.

And if you are really creative, here is a more advance tutorial on how to convert you egg timer!
Got and iPhone? Theres an egg timer for that!

What camera settings did you use to keep it taking photos while it spins?

As far as I know, all the Canon point and shoots cameras have a preset for timelapse video. If you have a Canon, switch to video mode, then go though the menu options and look for timelapse. Mine has the optin to take an image ever 1 second or 2 seconds. These videos were made with images taken every 2 seconds.

I’m not sure about other brands unfortuenetly!

I’ll have to check and see if its supported or if I can do it though the camera scripting features. Nice to see that CHDK is available for my model finally!

I found mine at the local grocery store for $3.50. You should be able to find plastic ones at the dollar store!

Could this hold up a dslr if it was on a real tripod?

Some egg timer may work – havent tested the Rebel on mine. I suspect the DSLRs will be too heavy for teh egg shaped timer, but may work on the other style in the last video.

Hey Clive, thanks for putting up my youtube link.
I’ve had lots of fun with mine, I started with my canon sd870
now I spin my GoPro hero camera in timelapse mode.
I don’t think any of these eggtimers will hold up a DSLR.
Here is the link to my last eggtimer blog post if anyone wants more
      information on my DIY.

LT, thanks for the link. I’m going to keep my eyes out for an egg style timer that I can use for my DSLR. What a great and simple idea- the kind of ideas I like the best!
