It looks like there could have been a new record sheep head in Ontario! Our friend Mike caught himself a massive 22.2 pounder back in 2008, that set the record and now Aaron Shirley (who some of you may recognize from such shows as Getting Hooked with Aaron And Barry) caught an even bigger one in the same area, tipping the uncertified scales at 27.5 pounds (12.5 kg)!

I’ve only caught them while fishing for other fish like bass or pike. They seem to like spoons and spinnerbaits!
We catch a ton of these on Lake Erie fishing for walleye in late spring/early summer. These fish fight like crazy, biggest I’ve caught is 8lbs – can’t imagine the fight on a 27lbs. In Erie they are called ‘Shitheads’. We mostly catch them on hair jigs tipped with minnows or worms, and when you start catching more than a few of them it means the walleye are done or almost done with the spring feed.
Now that’s a big fish! One look at that tail and you can tell it’s going to put up a powerful fight.
Holy crap! That’s a monster! I caught one of these babies once on a shad rapp trailed behind a bottom bouncer in 40 fow. At the time I didn’t know what the f it was, but it sure gave me a run for the money. Then it laid eggs on my buddies boat. It also swisted up my hooks. I think it was in the 6-8 pound range. From what I’ve read these guys are pretty opotunistic when it comes to feeding. I’m looking forward to running into one again some day. Tough fish!
@Catchers Mitt, I believe you’re thinking of the saltwater sheepshead. This fish is actually a freshwater drum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freshwater_drum) which is often called or referred to as sheepshead.
