Speyburn Whisky “Best Catch” Contest

I recently started drinking whisky and I’ve really begun to enjoy it now more than ever. Part of me thinks that it’s an age thing, or maybe it’s just because the people I camp with all drink whisky. Regardless there is something about the outdoors and whisky that simply pair perfectly. We’ve seen some questionable results when it comes to market blending of fishing and alcohol, but I think Speyburn Whisky has found a responsible route.

Speyburn is distilled in the famous Speyside region of the Scottish Highlands which has a long standing connection to conservation, fishing and the great outdoors. Today, Speyburn continues to use the time-honored traditional distillation method that was first used near the banks of the River Spey in 1897.

Speyburn Single Malt Scotch Whisky is searching for the “Best Catch” fishing tale. All they’re asking for is a photo and a 100-word fishing story for your chance to win. Every month one tale will be selected for a $50 Orvis gift card and they’ll even donate one dollar to the American Rivers organization for every single photo submitted from now until August 31st, 2012 when the contest ends.

The grand prize winner will receive a professionally-framed artist’s rendition of their photo and a $500 Orvis gift card! The runner-up will receive a Speyburn Merchandise package, an American Rivers gift card, and a $50 Orvis gift card.

Enter the contest on Speyburn Whisky’s Facebook page.

Please drink responsibly.

British Tourists Catch HUGE Sturgeon in BC

Michael and Margaret Snell, a retired British couple vacationing in B.C. have what could be the one of largest fish ever caught on a rod and reel in North America! The couple was on a guided fishing trip for sturgeon on the Fraser River in Chilliwack, where after a 90-minute battle they pulled in a sturgeon that was nearly four meters long and weighed about 500 kilograms (that’s over 1100 pounds)!

“You’re there waiting for the rod to go and all of a sudden it plunges down then you strike, and it’s on,” Michael Snell said. “I got my wife, Margaret, to hang on to me. ‘Hang on to my belt,’ I said, ‘Because if it pulls, I want to stay in the boat.”

The white sturgeon is the largest freshwater fish species in North American and can live up to 100 years or more. The fish was not tagged suggesting it had not been caught in nearly 20 years and was released to fight another day.

This fantastic polyester felt shark laundry basket was handmade by Etsy seller Ultramaryna. I’m sure we can all agree that our lives, and homes, need more shark related things. One thing I can’t agree on however, is the $150 price tag! But having said that this one is already sold! So maybe head to your nearest fabric store and try making one of these on your own.

We’ve covered Lake St. Clair musky before, mostly because they’re absolutely massive, and this post is no different. Sure it may not be the biggest musky at 42″ and 25lbs but it’s one of the biggest tiger musky I’ve ever seen*.

* The biggest I’ve ever seen is the Minnesota state record tiger musky after the break.
