Mike’s Hard Lemonade has just released a new series of commercials designed to catch those regular beer drinking fisherman. I really think they hit the target market alright as these were a delight to watch this morning. “Sometimes you gotta switch it up” as the saying goes.
Keep reading for three more commercials!

Haha some of those are really good
No amount of humorous ads are going to get me to drink that stuff. Malt liquor with a bunch of citric acid added. Makes my stomach lining hurt just thinking about it.
Seeing that we would lose our driver’s license for a year and possibly face jail time (depending on previous charges) for drinking in a boat, I would say these commercials are pretty bad!
Thats not entirely true, you are not allowed to operate a boat under the influence of alcohol. I’ve seen guys on big yachts and house boats that were anchored partying pretty hard.
What boats may carry alcohol in Ontario?
A boat with permanent sleeping accommodations and permanent cooking and sanitary facilities, other than a boat used to carry passengers for hire, is considered to be a private place while the boat is at anchor or is secured to the dock or land. (Sec.3/7 Read Ontario Liquor Licence Act for more.)
That’s right…..but these guys are not in a boat like that. I know of a few people losing their licenses for drinking in small fishing boats, I even know of a case where a guy having a beer while floating in front of his cottage in a canoe getting charged and losing his license. Canoes and row boats still fall under the boating laws even though they are not motorized. My point is that these commercials are saying that you can do something that is actually totally illegal and has consequences that can ruin your life and even cost you your job, and that’s just the legal part not the other deadly consequences that can come from drinking in a boat.
Just because it’s on tv doeesnt mean you can do it in real life. This is not news to me.
In my opinion saying these commercials are saying you can drink alcohol in your boat while you’re fishing is the same as them saying you can catch a mermaid with a cellphone.
So you would be ok if the commercial showed them cruising around in their car and drinking???!….same charge, same consequences, same risks.
Plus this is not a t.v. show, this is a commercial… the purpose commercials are to promote products and activities….
If they showed a video of them drinking and driving and then zoomed out and they were in a space ship, or their car was attached to the top of a 747 I wouldn’t have a problem because it’s completely unrealistic, just like these commercials. Nobody in this commercial consumed alcohol in the boat or while operating the boat. In fact nobody in this commercial consumed alcohol at all.
I’m not saying that by showing people drinking in a boat they’re responsibly marketing their product, I’m saying that I’m responsible enough to know where the marketing begins and ends. If you think this commercial is offensive or promotes unhealthy lifestyles then I would take up that complaint with the FCC.
Other important things to note:
1. I -rarely- drink alcohol, less than 5 drinks per month.
2. I watch maybe 5 hours of tv a week, probably a lot less.
….it is also illegal to have open alcohol in a boat, vehicle, etc whether it is being operated or not. Even if you are not actually drinking it. As soon as a bottled beer case is opened or cans removed from the plastic rings it is considered open, even if the bottle or can isn’t even open. Even if it’s in a cooler, unless you have that case or cooler thoroughly taped shut and out of reach, you can be charged(if the cops are that strict that is) Not arguing with you, just good information for everyone to know. I would hate to see someone go floating around in their canoe at their favorite lake with a cold one and end up losing their license.
You’re absolutely right, an open container is an open container, and that is illegal. I’m not disputing that at all, and Im not saying it’s responsible, but I don’t watch commercials and immediately go out and try to mimic everything they do- legal or otherwise. Because I see two very clear distinctions between television, marketing, and real life.
I was interested to know what the legality of these spots are, and now I’d be interested to know if these aired on Canadian television, or just in the states. Internet advertising in Canada is basically unregulated, but the CRTC very clearly outlines its requirement for alcohol advertising on tv, which some of these commercials clearly go against.
From the CRTC’s “Code for Broadcast Advertising of Alcoholic Beverages” (found here: http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/general/codes/alcohol.htm )
Commercial messages for alcoholic beverages shall not:
(l) introduce the product in such a way or at such a time that it may be associated with the operation of any vehicle or conveyance requiring skill;
(m) introduce the product in such a way or at such a time as may associate the product with any activity requiring a significant degree of skill, care or mental alertness or involving an obvious element of danger;
There are 17 points in their document, but those are the two that appear to be the most relevant to these spots.
I’ve seen them on Spike TV, American channel provided in Canada…
(m) introduce the product in such a way or at such a time as may associate the product with any activity requiring a significant degree of skill, care or mental alertness or involving an obvious element of danger;
Fishing does require a significant amount of skill and alertness.
[...] there is something about the outdoors and whisky that simply pair perfectly. We’ve seen some questionable results when it comes to market blending of fishing and alcohol, but I think Speyburn Whisky has found a [...]
That’s to bad that you have to wait for you trip “outdoors” to drink some whiskey….? Well I’m heading out to the lake for a drink, If you think these commercials say otherwise than I guess I’ll keep it to Mike’s Hard..should be all cool then. I think maybe all you folks should leave the pretend parks and fish in the real world and see how far you make it with your attitudes when the wardens check you regularly with guns in hand and cops by their side…..silly city folks, there is more to Ontario than the few hundred square km’s that you think there is.
Well I dont have to wait for a trip outdoors to drink some whisky. I just find in that setting it’s more enjoyable. I also dont drink very much in the first place.
