Kenneth Dahl Paintings

Kenneth Dahl is a retired painter from Washington state who wrote us a few weeks back to ask us what we thought of his paintings. These are my two favourite photos that he included, the second one is absolutely amazing. He’s also sent us a painting he just finished that I’ll post later.

“Leaving your mark is important and it is truly a blessing when what you do for a living completely facilitates that goal.”

Earthquake Brings Squid to California

A recent earthquake in California has shaken up a large group of Humboldt squid and sent them straight in to the beaches of La Jolla. Local residents were shocked and say they’ve never seen anything like this before. Check out the video!

This isn’t the first time we’ve covered the Humboldt squid, and when not confused by whatever occurred underwater during the quake they can even be quite aggressive and dangerous. In Mexico they refer to them as diablo rojo.

Raw video from the beach can be found after the break.

Man Wrestles Shark To Save Friend

A few divers were spear fishing for tuna in the Gulf of Mexico when a 12 foot tiger shark approached them. The encounter got heated when the shark began circling one of the divers. Sharks typically circle their prey to get a good look, and then close in if they decide they want to attack. As the tiger shark started to move in, the executive decision was made to attack it before it got any closer. Diver Craig Clasen wrestled the beast for two hours to protect his friend, spearing it seven times, and finishing it off with a knife.

“I wasn’t there to hunt the shark, it was a defensive move for me and I would do it again. Unfortunately it had to be done and its not something I was proud of. It was a situation that presented itself to us. This was one of those rare instances where we had to protect ourselves.

‘I have so much respect for sharks in general. With the amount of time that we spend out there we are exposed to so many potential risks.”

Dragged Out To Sea By A Giant Marlin!

Australian fisherman Darren Tierney thought it would be a good idea to jump out of his boat to spear a massive marlin that was swimming nearby. After an hour of being dragged around by the marlin, Tierney realized he wasn’t in a very good place. He was alone, in the middle of the ocean, a mile from his boat. Lucky for him, there were some fishermen near enough to hear his cries and he was taken back to shore with his fish.
