Monster Fall Muskie

Technically its winter, but there are still many areas in Canada and the US where muskies are still in season. This time of year your chances of getting a lot of muskie aren’t great, but when you do get one, chances are it’ll be big!

How To Remove a Deep Hook

Every fisherman has probably had this happen, a big fish inhales your bait and ends up with a hook deep in its throat. It’s never a good thing for a catch and release fisherman. The good folks over at In-Fisherman have but together an informative guide to removing these deep hooks. This is important stuff for any fisherman who wants to release a fish as safely as possible. Click the picture below to check it out.

(3) rolls out below the gill toward the side of the fish. At that point, amazingly, the hook, barb and all, almost always pops free from its hold in the fish’s gullet.

How To Fillet A Pike

Pike season in my old stomping grounds of Ontario is starting at the beginning of May. Since we have a large number of readers from Ontario I figured we should put the spotlight on these toothy critters (even more so then usual). Generally we recommend catch and release for these beautiful fish, but if you should decide to keep a few to eat, heres great video on how to fillet them.

Low Budget Fishing

I often consider myself a low budget fisherman. Many fishermen have a different rod and reel for every species they fish for, while I prefer to carry just one or two combos that cover all species. I even started making my own lures a few years back to save money. A lot of anglers get caught up in sending big bucks on the latest and greatest fishing technology, spending hundreds, and even thousands of dollars on reels. Fishing doesn’t have to be expensive though, just ask Ed Engleman.

Ed has dedicated his site to low budget fishing equipment you can build yourself. While some of his creations aren’t too aesthetically pleasing, they function just fine. With his instructions you can make your own fishing rigs and fly-tying vices for less then $6 each!

How To Make A Fishtank With A Condom

Well we already knew condoms can be used to start fires, but this one is really bizarre. And you thought the only use for your condoms was to make water balloons!

Create a free Condom Ecosphere from stuff found in any fishtank. (To buy parts would be about 5$). It magnifies the fish and is very strong (condoms can hold up to 6 liters of water). The Circle Of Life… In a Condom!

Save a fish, buy an SFDâ„¢

My friend Yuri sent me this link the other day with a handy little tool almost every fisherman can use. It isn’t often that we come across new innovative fishing products that not only encourage catch and release, but help fish survive an encounter with a fisherman. For those who don t fish often, a common problem with pulling certain fish out of deep water too quickly is a bloated bladder. When this bladder fills with air, the fish will not be able to descend back into its depths, and as a result it will often die. So how can this be problem be solved? With a piece of wire of course!

SFD

The SFDâ„¢ is a simple device used to decend fish with bloated air bladder back down greater than 30 feet to allow the water pressure to recompress fish’s air-bladder. For all species including rockfish, walleye, black bass, lake trout, groupers and all species that suffer barotrauma.

Re: Japanese Tackle Shops

That's the trouble right there, the finish on these Lures!...I started buying Rapala jointed and when i had a couple i just had to buy them in all the different finishes (Hot Perch, Perch, Walleye etc etc), i had so many in the end it was like i was collecting them to put in a glass case or something, i didn't dare use them, a Pike won't care if your Lure cost 5 quid or 30 quid, it's still gonna scratch all that fancy artwork/paintwork either way!...I sold all mine as a set on ebay in the end as i [...]

Re: Stormy Kromer Hat Contest!

I'm not much for a pithy comment, but I thought I'd leave a note about how honored I be to wear Kromer on my upcoming annual pheasant hunting trip to South Dakota. I'm sure that my hunting buddies will joke about how silly I look while they wear their stylized broad brim hunting caps, but I'll be laughing on the inside as my head stays nice and warm. I'll be laughing al the more when the stiff South Dakota wind picks up and Kromer is staying put. Finally, with the fall bite on, I know my new Kromer will call the [...]
