Though perhaps more well known in its native language of Spanish the Jig Multiuso Transformable should sound familiar none the less. This jig features a pliable disc around the outside that can be molded and folded into any position you can think of- drastically changing the action on the lure. This jig can be rigged to swim like a frog, an injured bait fish, or something so bizarre it doesn’t swim like anything else.

We all know anglers that seek the largest fish they can catch, but have you ever met those who try to catch the smallest fish they can, on a hook and line? Here in Japan, I have done so, and been lucky enough to indulge this particular variety of fishing.

Not unreasonably, most sport anglers want to catch trophy fish; the bigger the better (indeed, we all know anglers whose catches continue to grow in size long after the event, growing bigger with each recounting of the story of the fishing trip). However, this is Japan, where miniaturization pervades all aspects of life, in gardening, art, computers, electronics; we all have seen the clichéd ‘capsule’ hotels and bonsai pine trees you can pick up with two fingers. This also applies to sport fishing, in one of the oldest angling traditions in this country: tanago fishing.

Tanago is the generic term in Japanese covering the small freshwater fish of the Rhodeus, Tanakia and Acheilognathus genera; there are probably a dozen or so species that are considered sport fishing targets. In English, these fish are generally referred to as bitterling. Some species of tanago grow up to 15cm in size, although 5 – 10cm is more common. During spawning season, the males tend to develop a very striking pattern, a mixture of red and iridescent metallic colours, while the females, although ‘drab’ in appearance, develop a very long ovipositor, sometimes the length of their own body. A full description of the different species, and their very unusual mating habits and life cycle, is outside the scope of this text, but to me tanago are interesting fish for both ichthyologic and angling reasons.

Tanago are cyprinids, the carp family of fishes, and are generally omnivorous. They thrive in the waterways and channels surrounding rice paddies and lotus fields, sometimes in ditches no wider than a couple of feet or requiring a long slog through bamboo or reed thickets. I usually head to the lake system of Kasumigaura, a short journey north from Tokyo. Finding the spots holding tanago is part of the fun of the fishing, and there is always the distraction of the local flora and fauna if you do not; I have spotted a huge variety of waterfowl, and once even remarked a peregrine falcon – something most Japanese ornithologists can only dream of. Tanago are not fussy feeders and will take baits like bloodworm, commercially available starch or gluten-based pastes for carp fishing and even boiled egg yolk, on a simple float rig with a single hook. The main difference is of course, the size of the tackle, which is scaled to the size of the fish targetted.

Tanago anglers hold the belief that the smaller the fish landed, the greater the testament to the skill of the angler, and seek to catch the smallest fish possible. The prized catch of the determined tanago angler is the fish that can ‘fit inside a one yen coin’ i.e., is less than 20mm in length. After six months of tanago fishing, this prize still eludes me. A fishing buddy has taught me the ‘secret’ of sharpening one’s own tanago hooks: this is done under a microscope, with a watchmaker’s diamond file. It is not surprising then that most tanago anglers in Japan are considered eccentric, if not outright lunatics. Indeed, I once met a man who used to be a professional bass angler, but after winning several national competitions it ceased to amuse him.

He sold all his trophy bass gear to take up tanago angling on bamboo rods; now he travels the country year-round in the solitary pursuit of this new game. Tanago rods are made from bamboo and are usually 50cm to 1 metre in length, and the hooks 4 or 5mm long. In the Edo Period, the line used for tanago fishing was usually a single human hair, preferably taken from ‘a woman you love’. Allegedly, female hair has just the right level of elasticity and sinking characteristics necessary for tanago fishing, although perhaps a more prosaic explanation would be that the technology of the time could not spin silk thin enough, and that women wore their hair much longer than men did. Whether you choose human hair or the more readily available nylon, you can fit all your fishing tackle in a small pouch, or indeed your shirt top pocket; the rods usually break down in several pieces to about 20cm. There is a historical reason for this. In Edo, sport angling was considered a gross indulgence and in some periods, proscribed by law; one could hide a tanago rod easily in a pouch or bag slung from the waist. However, much like the use of hair as fishing line, history is subject to fancy, and whether the objective was to hide the rod from censorious authorities, or just to avoid the remonstrations of a scolding, non-fishing wife, is unknown.

In summary, tanago fishing has proved for me to be a most diverting form of angling. For those used to battling mahi mahi or tuna on a high running sea or epic plays with feisty trout on a fly, it may seem a highly eccentric past-time. I thought the same, until I tried it for myself. In the meantime, I have taken to making my own bamboo rods for tanago fishing, but that is another story, as is the various ways one can eat these fish. I have come close, once, to the holy “one-yen fish” but when I do succeed, I will be sure to remember it, and it will be one catch that does not become exaggerated in size with time.

On a lucky day in Tokyo

With the music blasting, the fire roasting our toes and beer cans emptying themselves into our bellies, none of my fellow cottage goers had any idea about what the Kokemachine was silently pulling off in the lake just feet away from our party. Suddenly, at 11:45pm, a bite alarm fired off with lights a blazin’ sending me flying from my lawn chair and landing at the foot of my rod. Finding it violently bouncing on my bank stick I lifted it quickly only to realize that the creature on the other side of this equation was far bigger than I was anticipating. After a short battle in the pitch black night the creature was resting in my hands under the glow of my head lamp. With a laugh of surprise I held up the night’s catch: a 3 pound largemouth bass. I quickly returned the fish to the water and resumed my party with a smile on my face.

It is in these moments when one begins to truly appreciate the crossover spoils of the multi-species fisherman. In Kokemachine country, I strive to read as many fishing books as I can possibly find, ranging from deep sea fishing to carp fishing. With a raving hunger for fishing literature, I’ve familiarized myself with the many techniques and rigs used for nearly every freshwater fish in North America and beyond. Many times the techniques I learn from one species will inform the techniques I use for another. In a time like this, however, it’s just a pure fluke.

In this situation to suggest that I had any idea that I was going to catch this bass would be a blatant lie. Being fortunate enough to be invited to a friend’s cottage on the Lake of Bays, I immediately began researching the fish species of the lake. There was one species in particular that had recently won a place in my heart: The Bullhead Catfish. Hoping to set up a night rig I scoured the net to see if this lake contained this species. Finding only vague answers, I opted to set up the rig anyway.

The rig was simple: a ½ ounce bell sinker rigged to slide and a short 10” fluorocarbon leader with a #6 circle hook rigged with a juicy night crawler right on the bottom. My rod was set up on a bite alarm and a bank stick, a staple for British style carp fishing. I figured that if I’m going to be near the water then I might as well be fishing in whatever way I could. After this moment of unexpected success, I doubt I will ever be able to resist setting up this rig anytime I’m sitting by the campfire, just to see what is roaming around.

Having a creek run through your property has several advantages. For me it means free baitfish for pike fishing. Unfortunately this year the minnow traps didn’t seem to be producing very many minnows. Of course not wanting to pay crazy prices for some minnows at a bait shop I decided to pull out some tiny hooks and catch some myself. Not sure what to expect I put on a tiny piece of worm on the hook and cast into a pool where the minnows always hand out. The bobber went down an instant after it hit the water! The action continued for several minutes like this until I had about a dozen minnows and decided I had enough for pike fishing. Unfortunately for the minnows I wasn’t able to catch a single pike this year with bait.

I know your thinking that this is supposed to be about carp, not minnows and pike, so I guess I should get to the point. A few days later, on may 21st, I was back for some more minnows. The action wasn’t nearly as good as the first time, but I still caught a few. Things were going at a slow pace until a carp swam into the pool and started rooting around looking for some food. This got my heart pumping and I held my breath as I cast about a foot in front of the carp and waited for the current to bring the tiny piece to the large fish. The worm drifted right to the carps mouth and it turned away to swim downstream. I let out the breath I had been holding then noticed the bobber was trailing behind the carp. I quickly pulled back on the rod and did the best to keep carp from pulling my line into some bushes that were both upstream and downstream. He did his best in the ten minute fight, but I emerged the victor with bragging rights to say I caught a large fish in my creek I could step across in most places.

Three days later my friend came over to try his luck after hearing about the carp and another hole full of them I had found. We both went down to the hole and tried the same tactic of drifting the worm to the carp. None of the carp seemed to be fooled this time. Thankfully they never spooked but just swam away slowly. After chasing the lazy group around for about 15 minutes, one finally took my bait. Once the carp figured out he was hooked he took off and didn’t let up until he was exhausted fifteen minutes later. Unfortunately that fight scared of the rest of the carp and the didn’t seem to come back for the rest of the year. Next year I’ll be ready again.
