Seattle has been hit by a powerful Pacific storm, that felt somewhere between a hurricane, a tropical rainstorm and a massive snowstorm. Needless to say the driving conditions were extremely poor due with 70mph winds, heavy downpour, and some places expecting several feet of snow. But for those along the Skokomish Valley Road the driving conditions were even more dangerous. The torrential rains flooded a nearby river pushing salmon right over the banks and across the road.

Kype Magazine released their latest issue for 2011 and I’m lucky enough to have a legit print copy! This is the first year I’ve seriously targeted salmonids like steelhead and salmon. It’s a whole new way of thinking about fishing for me, and its great publications like Kype and Steelhead Salmon Trout Fishing that really help me understand some of the finer points. Not just tips and tactics on the fish I’m targeting but also about how these trout fisherman are every bit as crazy fanatical as musky hunters. I don’t want to ruin it for you, but I’ve already read this one several times and the end is the best part.

Pure Alaska Salmon Review

I published this full-length review of Pure Alaska Salmon’s wild-caught canned Alaskan Salmon yesterday, but I’ve been so busy I forgot to post it to the main page. So here it is, I hope you’re hungry!

It’s been a while since we had a post as mouth-watering as this one, that’s normally Adam Guy’s arena these days. But despite the fact that I’m a good cook and a fisherman it’s not all that often that I’m eating fish at home. In fact, the last time I had a diet where I was eating fish consistently was in La Paz, where we ate Dorado, Snapper, and even Marlin and Tuna. Even then I left most of the cooking to friend and chef Micheal Leary. Still, I think I came up with a few really nice dishes made with Pure Alaska Salmon’s wild-caught canned salmon, like these fish cakes.

Salmon Fishing Video September 2011

In mid september a few friends and I headed out east in search of some salmon. We found a massive pool of coho and caught several big fish.

This was mostly filmed on a GoPro Hero HD with a chesty mount, the underwater shots are from my iPhone in a RainBallet case from The Joy Factory, the stills and a few other videos were shot on my Canon Elph 780IS.

Salmon Fishing Report & Water Gremlin Contest Reminder

I just posted a short report and photos in the forums about the salmon fishing trip I went on yesterday. Dave landed three solid fish, and there were several other guys that landed some absolutely massive ones. I still haven’t managed to land anything on my float setup yet, but I’m getting better and closer. I also dropped my reel in the water and had to fish it out by stripping all the line and backing which was a huge headache. I may head out again in the morning to the Credit River, hopefully I’ll have better luck.

Pure Alaska Salmon Salad Bacon Bowls

This is all part of an up and coming review of Pure Alaska Salmon canned wild Alaskan salmon, but it was so delicious that I thought I would share it as a mouth-watering first impression.

I made the bacon bowls out of two pieces of bacon, one cut in half to create the bottom, and one full strip around the side. The bacon is weaved over the bottom side of a cupcake tin covered in tin foil, very similar to these bacon cups. After the bacon cups were done cooking and cooled for a few minutes I filled them with some chopped spinach, bell peppers, tomatos, red onion and mushrooms. Then topped them with some Pure Alaska Salmon Think Pink! Pink Salmon and a few drops of olive oil, some fresh rosemary and ground pepper. After that I started experimenting with other flavours until I ran out of salmon and bacon bowls.

The wild pink salmon was absolutely delicious and it’s very healthy, not to mention sustainable, though I realize that I probably negated some of that by eating like eight pieces of bacon. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m very picky about my fish choices at the dinner table and I don’t like canned fish. I’ve never eaten canned salmon before, but I really enjoyed the overall taste and texture of the pink salmon even right out of the can. The full review will be coming in the next few weeks, until then you can enjoy some more photos of other combinations I created.
