The Prototype Shimano Tranx

All you muskie fishermen out thee looking for you next reel, look no further! The one and only Dave Mercer gives us a sneak peek at the latest prototype reel from Shimano while targeting muskie, and it looks great! While the Shimano Curado 300 series handles muskie pretty well, the Shimano Tranx takes it to the next level! Check it out!

So what are the specs? How about a 6.6:1 gear ratio, 25lbs of drag, holds up to 210 yards of 80lb braid, has 7 ball bearings, 1 roller bearing and pulls in up to 43 inches of line with each crank! Apparently there will be two models of this reel, a high gear (HG) and a power gear (PG) – both models will be priced around $500 USD, which means we probably wont be buying one to test/review, but if the good folks at Shimano are listening, this reel just moved to the top of our wishlist! This reel should hit shelves in March 2012.

Phantom Lures: First Impressions

In the past few years I have fished with a lot of great muskie anglers and they have all had one thing in common besides their love of muskie – they all had Phantom Lures in their tackle box.

Phantom Lures are high quality glide baits that are made in the good ole U.S.A. They feel like they are made of wood but are made of a solid, high impact polymer. The moment you lay eyes on these lures you can tell they are built to endure. Each lures is hand painted, covered with thick epoxy and assembled with heavy duty triple split rings.

The good folks at Phantom Lures have expended upon their great lineup of lures recently and offer several sizes ranging from a bite size 4 inches to a legendary 14 inches. As far as I know all size are available in each of the 15 patterns and with or without a soft tail.

Of all the glide baits I have used over the years, the Phantom Lure is one of the easiest and most fun to use. I’ve spent a lot of hours casting these beauties and they have earned a spot as one of my all time favorite lures!

Tackle Industries Super Cisco – First Impressions

If you like the Super Shad Rap by Rapala, you’ll love the Super Cisco from Tackle Industries. The size and shape are very similar, but the Super Cisco is a little bit fatter. The front lips are also a similar shape, but the Cisco’s lip is a little bit bigger and fatter. Even the weight is about the same, with the Cisco weighing 1.71 oz and the Shad Rap 1.60 oz. Both dive to about 8 feet, both sport 2 treble hooks and both have through wire construction. So this is the part where you’re probably thinking that this is simply a knockoff of the Super Shad Rap, but you’d be wrong.

The Super Cisco really sets itself apart in the details. It has 3D holographic eyes, a built in rattle, can be trolled over 10mph and comes in a ridiculous amount of colors and patterns with fresh and saltwater variations! How many patterns? Try 42. Which as many of you know is the “Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything“. How many patterns does Rapala offer? 12.

Evolve Baits Original Species & Pulse Frog- First Impressions

When we first mentioned Evolve Baits we were quite impressed by the hand painted details. After having inspected the Original Pulse Frog and Original Species Frog close up I’m now very impressed with the entire build quality. These frogs definitely look the business and feel built to withstand huge bass, even the jaws of pike and musky!

I wasn’t able to get out this weekend because it was Thanksgiving here in Canada, but I’m working on a trip to Mystery Lake in late October and I cannot wait to give these frogs a go, even if it might be a bit too cold for topwater.

Another Big Muskie On Rockstar Lures

My friend Bill sent me this photo of his girlfriend Tania and her personal best 43 inch musky. The fish was caught on an all pink Rockstar Lure! Furthermore, this is the biggest fish caught by a woman using Rockstar Lures!

New Jake Colours From Musky Mania!

The Jake has been one of my favorite musky lures since 2004 when I caught three nice size muskie on them at Mystery Lake, two of which where only 30 minutes apart. They come in several sizes ranging from 6-14 inches, they cast well, and troll brilliantly. Its a pretty rare event when a proven lure comes out in new colours, but the good folks at Musky Mania didn’t get the memo – they recently released 33 new colours!
