Our last contest isn’t over yet, but here is the final Christmas giveaway we’ll feature this year. Somebody thought it would be a good idea to give away one of my favorite lures as a prize! There may have been beer involved, but I agreed! This contest is a little bit different then our previous giveaways, this time you will need to guess how many lures are on and under the Fury Christmas tree! The tree features some new lures, and some of my very own used lures, including some that have caught many of my biggest fish! There is even an assortment big pike and muskie lures!

The rules are simple, each person has one guess, and in the event that the same number is picked twice, only the first person that picked it will be counted. There will be only one (1) winner. You must comment on this post with your guess, or comment on our Facebook page under the status update about this contest. If no one guesses the the exact amount, the substitute prize for the closest guess is one of the greatest lures ever made, a brand new Mepps Musky Killer (yellow and black) from one of my all time favorite fishing companies, Brecks.

Guess how many lures for your chance to win!

This contest will run until the final minute of 2011 (EST) and the winner will be provided with list of the lures shortly after!

All you muskie fishermen out thee looking for you next reel, look no further! The one and only Dave Mercer gives us a sneak peek at the latest prototype reel from Shimano while targeting muskie, and it looks great! While the Shimano Curado 300 series handles muskie pretty well, the Shimano Tranx takes it to the next level! Check it out!

So what are the specs? How about a 6.6:1 gear ratio, 25lbs of drag, holds up to 210 yards of 80lb braid, has 7 ball bearings, 1 roller bearing and pulls in up to 43 inches of line with each crank! Apparently there will be two models of this reel, a high gear (HG) and a power gear (PG) – both models will be priced around $500 USD, which means we probably wont be buying one to test/review, but if the good folks at Shimano are listening, this reel just moved to the top of our wishlist! This reel should hit shelves in March 2012.

In the past few years I have fished with a lot of great muskie anglers and they have all had one thing in common besides their love of muskie – they all had Phantom Lures in their tackle box.

Phantom Lures are high quality glide baits that are made in the good ole U.S.A. They feel like they are made of wood but are made of a solid, high impact polymer. The moment you lay eyes on these lures you can tell they are built to endure. Each lures is hand painted, covered with thick epoxy and assembled with heavy duty triple split rings.

The good folks at Phantom Lures have expended upon their great lineup of lures recently and offer several sizes ranging from a bite size 4 inches to a legendary 14 inches. As far as I know all size are available in each of the 15 patterns and with or without a soft tail.

*14 inch Phantom not pictured here.

Of all the glide baits I have used over the years, the Phantom Lure is one of the easiest and most fun to use. I’ve spent a lot of hours casting these beauties and they have earned a spot as one of my all time favorite lures!

Van Staal makes the only reel that look as at home on a solid gold chain as they do on a fishing rod. Their stunning design won me over the very first time I lay eyes on them and I have dreamed of owning one ever since. While the new VM150 doesn’t come in the same stunning gold and silver finishes its big brothers do, its still every bit as beautiful.

The Van Staal VM150 is the latest and greatest addition to my reel collection and will have a primary task of landing big striped bass here on the east coast. Its secondary, but most urgent task, is to join me on my upcoming trip to the British Virgin Islands to chase tarpon and several other species. I’m sure I’ll have a lot to say about this reel when I return in mid November, but for now, enjoy the unboxing!

“Never before has the strength and power of a Van Staal machined reel been offered in such a versatile and affordable option. The new VM150 features a changeable left- or right-hand retrieve, holds 350 yards of 30-pound braided line and can handle up to 30 pounds of drag stopping power. At $399 it’s the strongest, most affordable reel in its class. The fully machined aluminum and stainless steel construction of the VM150 create more than enough strength to tackle big and exotic fish and the precision gears and smooth drag performance make it the perfect go-to reel from boat or from shore.”

If you believe they hype, Kistler Rods are among the best in the business. They specialize in light weight, high quality premium bass fishing rods. This is only the second rod I have ever had shipped to me, I’ve always preferred to have a good look at a rod in person before buying. The last rod exceeded my expectations and I really hoped this one would too. The 7 foot rod came sealed in a long white PVC pipe, ensuring that no damage came to the rod during its travel from its birthplace in Magnolia, Texas to my doorstep in Halifax, Nova Scotia more than 2600 miles away. To say I was excited to see me new rod was an understatement. This rod was a complete surprise, I didn’t even know what type of rod I was receiving – I had just told Trey Kistler the type of fishing I like to do, and he said he had just the rod for me.

I opened the end of the its PVC tomb and pulled out a shiny new 2011 Magnesium Stick Worm – Swimming Bait Special 7’0″ Med-Heavy casting rod! With any Kistler rod the first thing most people would notice is its incredibly light weight. For me it wasn’t the weight that caught my attention, it was the colour. Green. It wasn’t a terribly pretty green by any stretch, but once I got it outside and the sunlight hit it it had a whole new glow to it. After a day of using this rod it didn’t matter. I would still use this rod even if it was bright pink, it is really that good. It’s so good in fact, that I haven’t even touched any of the six bass rods I have since I got it.

The rod is specially designed for stick-worms, light Texas and Carolina rigs, spinnerbaits, swimming-jigs and swim-baits. If you know my fishing style, I don’t have to tell you I used it mostly with spinnerbaits. The rod felt incredible paired with my Quantum Tour Edition PT reel. The microguides not only look great but perform extraordinarily. Even the baitholder hook impressed me!

The rod was priced around $200 USD when I got it, and is available right now for only $99! I really don’t think you can find another new rod on this planet that is priced better. The hype is real, even this mid range Kistler rod blows away any of the rods I currently own. I cant wait to get my hands on one of their high end rods!

Still not a believer? Stay tuned for the full review later this month!

Kristy is the riches woman in the UK and her husband Ernesto is the fifth richest in the UK, so a mere £100 million wasn’t really a big deal. This ridiculous yacht is the largest ever built in Britain and took 200 craftsmen over two years to build!

Back when we first got our hands on a GoPro camera we mentioned a pretty serious flaw with it. The camera takes awesome vivid images and video when it is not in its underwater case, but when it is, there is a very noticeable loss of focus and blur on the edges while under the water. Being fisherman, and wanting the camera to be used almost solely for underwater footage, this was pretty heart breaking. While there are some great workarounds thanks to some very creative people, we’ve gone with the BlurFix adapter from a company called Snake River Prototyping operating out of Idaho, USA. Not only does it solve the focus issue, but the BlurFix is the best looking solution I’ve seen so far.

The adapter is pretty easy to install and took me less than 15 minutes to complete, though you do need to let the sealant dry for 24 hours before you can use the camera. You’ll be provided with pretty much everything you’ll need to get the job done which is great because I typically don’t have aquarium sealant lying around the house. While the BlurFix adds a little bulk to an otherwise tiny camera, it does make it look a little bit more professional, instead of looking like a toy. Not only does it sharpen up the edges, but it allows you to change filters which I’m certain will come in very handy for most people who are into cameras.

The BlurFix kit includes installation materials and one clear filter for $75 USD. Now this isn’t very much in the world of camera adapters and accessories, but it may be too much for people who already think the GoPro is priced too high. Personally, I think the camera is a great price (I’ve paid more for lesser cameras), and an extra $75 to improve the hours and hours of footage you’ll no doubt get out of it isn’t very much in the grand scheme of things. We’ll share some underwater footage with you soon so you can see the adapter in action.

For those of you wondering how difficult it is to install, here is a 6 minute video from Snake River Prototyping that shows the BlurFix installation from start to finish.
