Second Place

The second place winner- and this is definitely no “secondary” prize- will receive a signed copy of Dave Mercer’s new book 135 Secrets Fish Don’t Want You To Know. This book is filled with an wide assortment of easy to understand tips that can improve your fish catching abilities, and it’s small form factor is great for your cottage, boat, even tackle box.

Third Place

Requirements

1. Fish should be legally caught in 2010 under the stated rules of your local department of natural resources. We ask that you do not submit out of season fish to this contest.

2. At least two high resolution (4 megapixel or greater) digital photos.* We want the ones straight off your digital camera, no photoshopping or colour correcting allowed. Just the raw photos please. *This is a requirement of the grand prize, though you could still potentially win secondary prizes with a low resolution photo, the higher resolution images are required by the printing process.

3. At least two paragraphs about your experience. Some things to think about: a title, location, species of fish, weather conditions, lure, etc.

4. Your full name and mailing address, along with your photos and story, emailed to staff@fishingfury.com with the subject of “2010 Contributor Contest”.

5. Multiple entries are allowed, though you can only win one of the top prizes.

6. Your contribution does not have to be about a fish you caught. You could write an article about Traditional Japanese Rod Building, or fishing for walleye in bad weather, even your favorite fish recipe! Your contribution only needs to be unique, related to fishing, and written by you!

1. Rapala X-Rap
Pattern: Clown

Rapala took the fishing world by storm when they introduced the X-Rap line of lures. The 4 3/4 inch XR12 lure in clown pattern should be in every pike fishermans tacklebox. What makes them so great? They cast far, the can be retrieved at any speed or twitched to create an irresistible swimming action. These lures can be extremely effective when pike are lazy. Simply pause your retrieve and allow the X-Rap to suspend. This action will often bring pike in close and they’ll inhale the lure once you start your retrieve again.

2. Suick Red Hot Thriller
Pattern: Firetiger

Suick lures have been around since the 1930s – the very fact that they are still sold today proves that these lures can catch big fish. I became a believer in these lures back in 2005 when Jon and I were fishing for spring pike at Little Vermilion in Northern Ontario. We were both watching the lures rise and dive just below the surface when all of a sudden a mound of water began to raise behind the lure. Within seconds a massive pike smashed the lure with extreme prejudice and almost pulled the rod from my hands. I haven’t been on another pike trip without that lure in my tackle box.

3. Rapala Glidin’ Rap
Pattern: Hot Olive

Another Rapala makes the list. This is a pretty new lures here in North America and is already a new favorite for us, specifically the Hot Olive pattern. Its got a great side to side sliding and gliding action that proved the be the most reliable pike lure we used at Toronto Islands this year. This lure is 4.75 inches long and 1.3 oz. And for all of you fishermen who prefer bigger lures, Rapala is adding a 6 inch, 2.5 oz model into the mix, as well as three new colours.

4. Rockstar Lures
Pattern: Heavy Metal Silver

What can I say about these lures? I love them. The biggest pike I’ve ever caught came on one of these beauties. Of course, you may say my opinion is biased since I am the creator of the big spinners, featuring #8 French blades, but these lures we created solely for catching pike. They cast far, can be trolled, and they create an irresistible vibration under the water thanks to large blades.

5. Mepps Black Fury
Pattern: Yellow or Chartreuse

Last and certainly not least, the Black Fury. I prefer to use the #5, 1/2 oz version personally, but pike will go after smaller incarnations as well. If you ask me, there is no better lure for covering water than this French spinner. Fast or slow, deep or shallow, this lure produces fish. Mepps does make larger versions of the Black Fury specifically for pike and musky, but the plain old #5 has produced more pike for me then any other lure. For an added sense of security I usually remove the standard hook and replace it with a larger one just to make sure the big ones don’t get away.

When targeting pacific salmon [King (Chinook), Silver (Coho), Red (Sockeye), Chum, and Pink] on their annual spawning run, you need to use the brightest and most irritating lures possible. This is because when salmon begin their run up-stream, they stop eating and will not attack any lure because they are hungry. Instead, they only strike out of irritation.

I have done pretty well catching salmon with spinners also. I have used many different brands and have notice that the bigger and brighter the spinner is, the better the salmon strike. While I have never used a spinner from Rockstar Lures (picture above), they look to be exactly what the salmon like, or are irritated by. They are large in size, have bright/contrasting color combinations, and have a spinning blade for that extra flash and vibration. This spinner is definitely great for aggravating the salmon into striking. Check out their website: Rockstar Lures

Funny enough one of Clive’s lures were picked up in a mothers day post about fishing by The Examiner, and it just so happens that this is one of the lures we shot underwater at the Toronto Islands last week! I put together a quick video of the footage, Clive said he liked it, so I hope he doesn’t mind that I posted it.

Behold, The Mother of All Lures going for a swim.

As with our previous videos, the music was provided by the Total Camble Experience.

I kind of wish I had the camera set to macro mode, the Sanyo’s auto-focus really likes to focus on the water surface for some reason. Anyway, expect a full review of the Sanyo WH1 soon as Clive and I both may be trading them in to purchase a GoPro Hero.
