The Bassassins – Marvellous Musky

The Bassassins are back again with another fantastic video. While fishing some of their favourite spots on the Rideau River for bass they hooked into this trophy 47″ musky on a soft plastic! That’s a huge musky on what looks like a medium action spinning rod. Can you imagine the fight?!

The weather has been all over the place this summer and that has been moving the water levels up and down in some of our favorite fishing spots. Today we were finally able to hit our home stretch for some bass and ended up with this HUGE surprise in the shallows of the Rideau. She must have been hungry to hit Basstards soft plastic but we won’t complain. PB for the Bassassins at 47″ and a fish we won’t soon forget.

Top 5 Spring Muskie Lures

There is no better time to catch muskie in numbers than the spring and early summer. Temperatures above and below the water surface are still relatively cool and muskie have finished their spawning. During this time they are likely still found grouped in shallow water or slowly moving toward deeper water. By concentrating efforts in fairly shallow water, we have been able to catch several great fish over the years. Here are a few of our favourite spring time muskie lures.

5. Believer by Drifter Tackle

To be honest, I wasn’t a believer in this lure until this year. Sure I’d heard the stories of this world famous lure, but it had never caught me a fish. In fairness, I didn’t use it very often because I simply didn’t like the look of it. It’s body looks like a deranged combination of a platypus and a manatee. After boating four nice muskie with the Believer during the first two muskie trips of the year, it has earned a permanent spot in my muskie tackle box.

The Believer is ideal for trolling and casting and is available in several colours and sizes up to 13 inches.

The King by Tristan MacRae

This report comes from Tristan MacRae and was submitted as part of our 2012 Contributor Contest.

My Dad and I headed down to the Lake. We have a little dinghy that we paddled into the deeper part of the basin and anchored. We were casting for about 20 minutes, when a massive hit on a spoon made me jump. I gripped it hard as the fish tried to get away. I think I fought it for about 10 minutes. The fish went around the dinghy and tried many short runs, but my drag was pretty firm, so he didn’t go too far. It’s bad when they go under the boats, because then they snap the line. Once it tired, I reeled it closer to the boat and my Dad netted it for me. My arms were so tired afterwards. That was the hardest fighting fish I have ever caught and the biggest. It was 37″ and 22.5 lbs. I couldn’t fish anymore after that.
