My good friend Phil alerted me to this fantastic swordfish tattoo by artist Matt Adamson. It’s difficult to understand the placement of the tattoo from the photos below but it looks to me like the tops of the shoulders, as if the swordfish has gone through the neck. Matt is now stationed at Jayne Doe tattoo studio in Essex, and if you’re nearby and looking for tattoos I would definitely recommend you check him out. You can see more of Matt’s amazing work and follow him on Instagram. Another great shot after the break with elements of the original drawing.

HOOKED UP is a new fishing show featuring host Tom Colicchio, more commonly known for his role as the head judge on Top Chef, as we follow him and his guests on their nautical journey. Tom’s guests and friends are top athletes, famous musicians, as well as TV and movie stars. The fishing is hot, the booze is cold, the conversations are candid, and it all reminds me of a modern-day take on Fishing with John. In this episode Jane’s Addiction and Satellite Party frontman, Perry Farrel, and his wife Etty Lau join Tom for a day of sailfishing. Farrell shares his views on drugs, prostitution, philanthropy, and the future of Lollapalooza. HOOKED UP is available on Reserve Channel, an original youtube channel that provides access to some of the most extraordinary and compelling original programming for free!

We’ve seen huge marlin jump right into the boat, several times, but I don’t think we’ve seen a boat capsized by one before. Apparently the captain was “backing down”, a common practice where that captain puts the boat in reverse at full throttle to chase a running fish, when he fell and the boat took on too much water and sank. We’re adding new content and images you’ve never seen before! This week we have two fantastic fishing reports from 2005 when Clive and I were both living and fishing in La Paz, Mexico. Stay tuned for more throwback updates in the coming weeks! Beginner’s Luck, Gracefully Out-Fished by a Novice It’s been difficult finding fishing partners in La Paz since Clive left for the British Virgin Islands. I’ve some found people willing to go, but not after they find out we leave Fishermen’s Fleet at 5am. There’s not many people interested in waking up hours before the sun in the land of cheap cerveza, but I managed to convince Mike Brum and Philip Barbosa. Promising them an unforgettable experience before they went to bed, I [...]

When I first saw the headline I thought it was a repost from the first time scientists captured footage of a giant squid, but as it turns out this is entirely new. Scientists in a submersible vehicle captured footage of a giant squid in its natural habitat, apparently between 600-900 meters underwater, for the very first time. The only video I could find is the one below of someone filming the footage shown on Japanese television. Hopefully a better copy of the video will be released soon. They spotted the squid at a depth of 630 meters using a submersible in July, some 15 km east of Chichi Island, part of the Ogasawara chain. The submarine with three people on board, including Tsunemi Kubodera from the museum, followed the enormous mollusk to a depth of 900 meters as it swam into the abyss. The creature was about 3 meters long, [...]

Around this time every year we see huge bluefin tuna auctioned off to the highest bidder in Tokyo’s Tsukiji fish market, and every year they set a new record (no doubt due to overfishing). This year the bar has been set at $1.7 million dollars, that’s more than 4 times the record from last year by the way. And the tuna sold is nearly 50 kilograms lighter than last years! Even the buyer, sushi chain owner Kiyoshi Kimura, who also paid out the record price last year, said the cost was “a bit high”. This year’s record-breaking fish was caught off north-eastern Japan and weighed in at 222kg (489lbs), some 47kg lighter than last year’s prize-winner, which fetched 56m yen. The prices do not necessarily reflect quality or size and are more linked to publicity and setting the tone for the business year. He said he wanted to “encourage Japan” [...]
