I took a trip to Islamorada, Florida with family and friends for a fishing extravaganza in June 2010. We fished day and night for Tarpon, Swordfish, Dorado, Permit, and more. In all, we caught 15 different species of fish on the trip. On our third day out, I hooked up with this Permit which re-calibrated my idea of what fighting a fish is. The epic battle took 35 minutes. I instantly knew this fish deserved to be mounted. So that is what I did. Now, I can remember that trip and that epic adventure every time I look at my wall! Date: June 17, 2010 Weather: Beautiful Species: Permit Size: 45” (50 lbs) Location: Caught on the Atlas Wreck, Islamorada, Florida Keys My trophy was caught on a 9’ Star rod w/ Fin Nor Offshore Spinning Reel with 30 lb Spectra and a 60 lb fluorocarbon leader tipped with a [...]

The world still seems to still be in shock over the death of Steve Irwin, the people of Australia even more so. Steven’s body arrived home early yesterday morning, where police viewed the video tape of his death. “It shows Irwin ripping the ray’s barb out of his chest just before he lost consciousness and died.” “It’s a very hard thing to watch because you’re actually witnessing somebody die … and it’s terrible. “It shows that Steve came over the top of the ray and the tail came up, and spiked him here (in the chest), and he pulled it out and the next minute he’s gone.” According to police and marine experts, Steven did not aggravate or intimidate the ray in any way that should have resulted in an attack. Experts say stingrays do not lash out except as a reflex action when threatened, but Queensland police have viewed [...]

While I was in Santa Cruz for Thanksgiving I made sure that I visited the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Though my choice of going the day after Thanksgiving was not the brightest one, I did have a great time and managed to take a few great photos despite the overwhelming crowds of children. All of the images here were taken with a Canon PowerShot SD550, and not my usual Canon PowerShot SD10 ELPH because I forgot the battery in Mexico. Upon entering the aquarium the first thing you see is the awesome Kelp Forest exhibit complete with a large school of tiny fish, Leopard Sharks, and a Wolf Eel I couldn’t get a clear picture of. Be sure to check out the live kelp cam. As you might expect there were more exciting and strange animals at every turn, like this Sheep Crab (pictured below). It wasn’t long before we started [...]

While living and fishing here in La Paz I’ve seen my fair share of amazing aquatic life, from sea lions, to dolphins, to enormous sailfish. But not much can compare with seeing large groups of mobulas (cousins of the manta ray) breaching the surface, flying 5 to 10 feet in the air spinning and flipping, just out of arms reach. Clive and I tried our best to capture photographs of these amazing creatures, but we were often too focused on the fishing. Luckily for us, Michael Albert was able to capture a handful of amazing photographs. There couldn’t be more than 60 minutes of light left. My brother begins to set up camp while I scramble to unlash the kayak resting on the roof of my pickup. As my kayak arrows towards the activity, I grow anxious, willing the sun to stay up a just a bit longer. About half [...]
