Blue Water Jon Meets Blue Eyed Squid

If you’re a fan of fishing photography there’s no doubt you’re a fan of Jon Schwartz AKA Blue Water Jon. We’ve covered some of Jon’s amazing photos in the past, and this time is no different. Well, it’s a little different in that it’s not fish, but instead a massive school of squid inches from his face.

Today I came face to face with a giant shoal of squid and got some amazing underwater pictures! I had hoped to get fishing photos of white seabass, thresher sharks, and yellowtail, but I never dreamed I would encounter a massive, frothing mass of squid. I really lucked out! This was a local Southern California excursion where I accompanied my kayak fishing friend Josh Pruitt. He has an uncanny knack for catching big fish from kayaks.

The Largest Eyes In The World

I always figured elephants had the largest eyes in the world, but apparently squid do. Below are the lenses taken from the eyes of a colossal squid on April 30, 2008.

The giant sea creature, caught last year off Antarctica, is believed to be the biggest squid ever captured, and scientists have determined that it has the largest eyes of any known animal.

There is very little known about these incredible invertebrates, but scientist are determined to learn everything they can about them – by cutting them up! If you though squid were bizarre creatures before, wait till you see this.

You Call That The Biggest Squid Ever?

According to the scientists this squid, current holder of the ‘biggest ever caught’ moniker, may be small compared to other still lurking in the depths. Regardless, the bar has been set at 1,090 pounds (465 kilograms) and about 33 feet (10 meters) long.

New Zealand Fisherman Catches New World Record Colossal Squid

Not to be left out in all the Giant Squid news, the Colossal Squid makes its appearance with a new world record. The first ever adult colossal squid to be landed intact, weighted in at an estimated 450kg (990 lbs) and 10m (33 ft) long, and over two hours to land. The Colossal Squid is the largest known squid family in the world normally found in deep Antartic waters where the men were fishing for Patagonian Toothfish when the squid, also feeding on the toothfish, was caught. The fisherman quickly realized the importance of such a catch and took great care to make sure the specimen was in good condition freezing it below deck.

One expert said calamari rings made from it would be the size of tractor tires.

Giant Squid Use Light Emitting Organs to Blind its Prey

Japanese scientists are learning more and more about these giant squid, this time they have released new footage showing a spectacular array of lights coming from the squid tentacles. These squid, once thought of as gentle creatures, show an increasingly aggressive predatory instinct. The films were taken at depths of 240m to 940m (790 to 3,080ft) and show the squid reaching speeds up to 2.5m (8ft) per second as they attacked the bait, engulfing it with all eight of their tentacles and blinding flashes. Other squid have already shown the ability to communicate by changing color, no doubt the giant squid are capable of the same.

Live Giant Squid Specimen Captured in Japan

A rare giant squid was just caught in Japan. These elusive creatures are rarely seen, but now one has been caught, alive! The specimen below was seven metres long!

Previously Japanese scientists where the first to ever capture film of a giant squid.
