I’ve had the pleasure of snorkeling in a school of baitfish while larger fish were feeding on them, it was an incredible site. Of course, if these guys were around, I’d probably keep my distance!
The small fish are sardines which were herded into a baitball by dolphins off the coast of South Africa. Other predators, including Bronze Whaler sharks, soon arrived to feed.
In Ghana, West Africa, when you die, you go out in style - If you’re rich. These spectacular fantasy coffins often cost more then the average Ghanaian earns in a year.
“a fisherman may be buried in a model of his boat or, Jonah-like, in a large sculpted fish. The farmer is borne within an icon of his beloved bull, the politician powers off in his mahogany Merc, and the frequent flyer wings his way to heaven in a balsawood 747. You can have whatever you and Paa Joe think best reflects your business or takes your fancy - except powerful birds, which are reserved for royalty and prominent leaders.”
In Nigeria, fishing is taken very seriously. Thousands participate in the annual Angunga Fishing Festival which has taken place since 1934. The 2008 winner was stripped of his title and thrown in jail after officials learned that he cheated by using a fish he had caught prior to the festival.
On the final day of the festival, a competition is held in which thousands of men and women line up along the river and at the sound of a gun shot, all of them jump into the river and have an hour to catch the largest fish. The winner can take home as much as 7,500 US dollars. Competitors are only allowed to use traditional fishing tools and many prefer to catch fish entirely by hand (a practice also popular elsewhere and known as “noodling” ) to demonstrate their prowess.
There are a lot of brave stupid people out there. We saw man versus crocodile last week, but these are even crazier. This guy got up close and personal with a great white to pet him. Considering a shark that size could bite him in half, it’s not the smartest thing to do. It did make for a great photo at least.
Not to be outdone the the shark petter, this guy armed with nothing but his ponytail, crawls right up to a lion for a close up game of cat and mouse. Incredibly, he lives to tell the tail. I think I’d rather take my chances with the shark, at least you are fairly safe when in a boat.
It is said that the world greatest sport fish it the Tarpon (Megalops Atlanticus). With its brute strength and acrobatic displays its no wonder they call this fish the (silver)king. I was lucky enough to catch several tarpon in the British Virgin Islands a couple of years ago. I’ve never caught a fish with such power and agility and I have been obsessed with them ever since constantly reading about them and viewing pictures of 200 pound giants. When I show people photos of the tarpon I caught, they are always amazed by how big they are, but the fish I caught were just babies compared to some of the world records.
The current world record (far right) was caught by Max Domecq on March 20, 2003. The massive tarpon weighed in at 286lb 9oz (130kgs) and was caught in Rubane, Guinea-Bissau, Africa.

That's the trouble right there, the finish on these Lures!...I started buying Rapala jointed and when i had a couple i just had to buy them in all the different finishes (Hot Perch, Perch, Walleye etc etc), i had so many in the end it was like i was collecting them to put in a glass case or something, i didn't dare use them, a Pike won't care if your Lure cost 5 quid or 30 quid, it's still gonna scratch all that fancy artwork/paintwork either way!...I sold all mine as a set on ebay in the end as i [...]

I'm not much for a pithy comment, but I thought I'd leave a note about how honored I be to wear Kromer on my upcoming annual pheasant hunting trip to South Dakota.
I'm sure that my hunting buddies will joke about how silly I look while they wear their stylized broad brim hunting caps, but I'll be laughing on the inside as my head stays nice and warm. I'll be laughing al the more when the stiff South Dakota wind picks up and Kromer is staying put.
Finally, with the fall bite on, I know my new Kromer will call the [...]
