Recently a massive 79 pound (35.8 kg) blue catfish was caught by Jayson Zerda of Unadilla, New York, setting a new Maryland state record. This amazing catch beat the old state record by more than ten pounds!
The fish was 49.5 inches long with a girth of 38 inches.
As impressive as Mr. Zerdas record catfish looks, its not even remotely close to the current world record blue catfish – just have a look at this!
Caught by Tim Pruitt, this world record blue catfish weighed 124 pounds (56.2 kg) and was caught on May 22 2005 near Alton, Illinois in the Mississippi River.
The fish measured a staggering 58 inches in length and was 44 inches around! Just last month an even larger blue cat was caught, weighing 130 pounds. It is currently under review by the IGFA and may take the world record title from Tim Pruitt.
Caught by Greg Bernal, of Florissant, Missouri – July 20 2010.
We’ve given China a hard time here in the past. The levels of pollution in many lakes and rivers is staggering. Not all of China is polluted of course, here are some places in china I’m sure we’d all love to fish.
Heres a fish I had never seen or heard of until two years ago when a co-worker introduced them to me. He and his dad fished for them when he was younger. After he showed me a few photos and I was amazed. The paddlefish is a very unique freshwater fish. Their skeletons are primarily composed of cartilage much like a shark, and they can esialy be identified by their huge rounded bill.
Chinese paddlefish caught in the Yangtze River can grow up to 9 feet long and weigh over 600 pounds. Both the American and Chinese paddlefish eat zooplankton which they filter through their huge mouth and gills.
Fishermen generally catch these fish by snagging them with heavy equipment and large hooks.
The world record American paddlefish was caught in Kansas by Clinton Boldridge on Carp bait May 5 2004, and weighed 144 pounds. It was 75 inches long with a 45 1/4 inch girth.
Agreed, swinging spiked bats around while water skiing is probably very dangerous. That said, I'm sure these guys are professionals :D
If I'm ever in Chicago it will be very tempting to make the 8 hour [...]
Sounds good to me Jon!
Yeah I'm always big on non-lead options too. Something about the reproductive toxicity of lead makes me uneasy in the nether regions.
