I know them as Walleye, some people call them Pickerel. Pierre, a fisherman from France who sent in this of his catch calls them Sandre. What other names can you think of for this wonderful meaty game fish?

Hi all.
Thanks for your web site . That’s the best one i’ve found when it deals with fishing.
That’s an everyday life pleasure to glance at the incredible pictures you digged up.
Here is the picture of a Sandre (in french), i think the proper translation is Pike Perch or Zander
That’s not a monster but I don’t think you already have one picture of this species on your website, it looks really similar to Walleye.
I’ve caught this Pike perche of 3.5kg for 71 cm in a small river of Normandy two days ago.
I wish you the best
Regards
Pierre
Beautiful photo Pierre! It’s nice to see that the fall photos are coming in too. Not that you would know here in Toronto. Not to mention google is saying its going to be 19C for the rest of the week.
I’ve received a few reader submissions lately, and I’m trying to get caught up on posting them, but October has been a busy month! Here great looking tench from France submitted by Nicolas. More to come soon!

Hi, I’m Nicolas of France. Your site is a marvel, with very nice photographs.
This is a photo of a small Tanche of 2 pounds (tench in English)…
Thanks Nicolas!
If the naysayers are right, by tomorrow night (in the western hemisphere) you will no longer be able to read Fishing Fury. You will no longer be able to read. You will no longer be able to get go fishing. You will cease to exist.
Luckily I’m a glass half full kind of guy, and this whole thing probably wont even be as bad as Y2k was. In case you don’t know what I’m talking about, on Wednesday September 10th, 2008, a Large Hadron Collider will be activated, sending protons traveling at extraordinary speeds in the opposite direction in massive 17-mile underground loop located beneath the border of France and Switzerland. What does it all mean? I have no clue, but it sounds pretty cool. Speaking as a scientist fisherman, I think there is zero chance that the world will end.

If by some bizarre twist of fate they forgot to carry a one and we don’t make it, so long and thanks for all the fish!
I got an email the other day with some info on the mystery pike we posted last year. Looks like this beauty was definitely caught in Italy as we had first believed. The second mystery pike was caught in France! I can’t confirm yet if they are 100% true, but at least its a start!

I only wanted to tell you that the monstrous pike in the photo in the attachment has been caught in the 2006/2007 winter in the Lake Maggiore, in northern Italy and it was released after the photo.

This fish was caught in France. It was in a lake which name is Pareloup (in Aveyron). The lucky fishermen were Philippe COSTE and Arnaud FOISSAC and the fish’s weight was 19,4kg (43Lbs) and the length was 1.37m (53.9 in)
On a small volcanic island situated in Indian Ocean the some eccentric wealthy yacht owners go out fishing for Great White and Tiger sharks, but it seems that’s no longer good enough, or perhaps it never was. At least two dogs have been been recently found alive with huge double hooks through their snout and another through one of their legs. Luckily these two dogs were able to free themselves, somehow, from the fishing lines they were attached to and escape a grotesque and horrible fate. This is truely one of the most disgusting things I can ever imagine seeing. I have occasionally made passing comments and jokes about using kittens for Musky bait, but I would never actually do these things. All I can really say about the situation is that the punishment should fit the crime.

STRAY dogs are being skewered on hooks and dragged behind boats as live shark bait, The Sun can shockingly reveal.
The cruel practice takes place on French-controlled Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, where Prince William spent two holidays.
A six-month-old labrador pup was recently found ALIVE with a huge double hook through its snout - like the dog above - and another through a leg.
The pup was found in a coastal creek and is thought to have somehow freed itself from a fishing line.
But other dogs and kittens have been chomped up and swallowed by sharks.
The RSPCA plans to petition the French government, demanding an end to the hideous torture.

UPDATE: Clive also pointed out some information on Snopes urban legend reference that says while the practice has happened in the past it is very rare and isolated to a few amateur, but perhaps still rich, douchebags. Snopes also has a letter written from the French Embassy to Washington D.C. that sheds a little bit clearer light on the whole situation.
Thank you for writing to us with your concerns. We too denounce the barbaric practices you refer to. Such acts are obviously illegal and will not be tolerated on French territory. But while we share your revulsion, we would like to emphasize that the practice of using live dogs or cats as shark bait is in fact exceptional and isolated. It was never widespread nor traditional, but introduced by ruthless individuals, and has been strictly banned for decades now.
And in good taste I removed the joking reference to Reunion Fishing Club.
