New rod

So I “need” a new fishing rod that I can keep in my jeep for “emergencies” like a bluefish blitz in the harbor that I may or may not be able to see from the office. I would also use it to fish for striped bass at a few spots at lunch time if the tide is right.

Now I use something that could be considered a VERY heavy bass or kind of light pike/muskie rod. It is 7’6” with a retractable but stock so while it does fit in the jeep, its specs are: Heavy power, fast action, 12-30 line weight, and 3/8-2 oz lure weight.

I was thinking of getting a 2 piece muskie rod since a lot of folks around here use them for inshore saltwater fishing (bass, blues, fluke, flounder, etc). Not having any experience with muskie specific rods and not being able to get to BPS anytime soon I am turning to you guys. This is the rod I was thinking of getting. The 2 piece 7’6” version but 2-10 oz lure weight seems kind of extreme. I will generally be casting pretty heavy lures but I wonder if that rod would even cast a 9” SLUGO well. Any other suggestions?

Rod looks just like my the same blank as my pete maina signature series musky rod. It's a great rod too!

I do believe thats exactly the same as the old Maina rods - except they dont sponsor him any more as far as I know.

Its an awesome rod, but my favorite option in that price range is the Shimano Compre

I've used mine for muskie and pike mostly, but spent a good amount of time catching bass on it and have nothing but good things to say about it!

Clive: That does look like a nice series but a key feature I need is a two piece so it will stop taking up so much room in the jeep.

Jonathon: Is yours the 6’6” version? In the catalog it looks like the “jerkbait/big crankbait” is the 6’6”. Also, you mentioned a while back that you were thinking of selling that reel because it’s right-hand retrieve. Are you still thinking about that?

Yea my rod is a single piece 6'6" (maybe more, but I dont think so). And yes I still have that reel, in the box nice and fresh with 65# PowerPro spooled on it- I'd love to sell it to someone who's going to use it!
