View Full Version : Island Fishing Last Week
Hey guys, I'm new to the forums but have been fishing the islands for while. Finally got some time last Saturday to head out to the island with some buddies again for some fishing. Probably the worse possible day to go as it was severely windy, rainy, and also cold as hell. Began the day around olympic island area but the extremely low water levels and overgrown weeds made it impossible to fish so I decided to head to the stadium in the main channel. Spent about 4 hours at the stadium and there was nothing. Not surprising since the wind was enough to blow my lures right back into my face. Tried practically everything, glidin raps, deep divers, spoons, aglia, and even spinners. Eventually decided to bust out the trusty old black fury and a couple casts later miraculously landed a pike, our only fish of the day. Took me forever to reel this guy in as the current kept dragging the pike towards the bridge direction. If i remember correctly, it measured out to be almost 28". Pike seemed like it wouldnt be surviving if I let it go so I decided to bring it home to feed my stingrays. Snapped a quick pic and then packed up and left before the huge storm cloud got to us.

Crazy, its not often we get pike reports from the islands at this time of year! Too bad he didnt make it :sorry:
Lol yeaa, I wasn't really expecting a pike at all. I was just hoping not to get skunked and I guess I got lucky.

According to a book a read years ago, its is safe to consume up to one pike per year in that section of Lake Ontario!

Ouch! That doesn't say good things about the contaminate level. Of well, at least you can catch (or try to catch) as many as you want.

Thats one of the bad points to fishing down here. Even if you do happen to get some nice bass or walleye, it's barely even safe to consume with all the contaminants in the water.

I believe it depends on the size of the pike and the built up contamination in the food chain. Ontario puts out a book now that gives safe levels of consumption on all types of fish from all types of waters, it's a must have if you're eating fish. I'm pretty sure you can eat more than one pike per year provided theyre under 30".

Other parts of Lake Ontario are safe, but anything near Hamilton is toxic!

Well that's good new since I'm planning to go trout and salmon fishing on Lake Ontario out of NY on the 25th and 26th. Not sure exactly where though.
