Anyone know of good pike fishing, besides the obvious, over fished lakes that everyone and their dogs go to? Looking for a hidden gem western Alberta. I know people like to keep their spots to themselves, so any info will be good. Love to catch pike on the fly and have a great spot near Rocky Mountain House, AB, just looking to try something new this year.

Thanks all! :)

Today I had the day off ...
So, went out to CENTRE ISLAND in the afternoon.

Was planning on targeting: CARP, PIKE & BOWFIN.
This is my FIRST TIME this year out to the Islands - Last year by now, I had been out about a Dozen times.

The weather was good (things warming up) and water levels up high.
I didn't see any BOWFINS - which was a bit disappointing. Will definitely have to track them down!

Worked the canals & ponds, and then headed over to the Mariana area.
The pike were definitely cooperating.

Enjoy the Video:

Got another chance to head out to the Beautiful Toronto Harbour Front on Monday.
The Pike were in Shut Down mode... so I went for Carp.

Was fortunate enough to hits some big ones.
The second one is probably the biggest I have taken from the Harbour.

Carp are a Blast to catch in the DEEP/ BIG waters of the Harbour Front.
They sure can pull some hard runs.

Enjoy!

Met up with Adam and Michael on an impromptu trip...

Adam landed a small steelhead and one about 3-4lbs. Michael lost one. I lost 3 to the darn logs again (yeah, I hooked up one more in late afternoon, Michael).

Steelhead were playing hard to get today. I noticed all these other fish swimming about...so time to downsize...

How small?

This small!

Johnny Darter (Etheostoma nigrum) - Species #306!

It was fun fishing for these 1-2" long fish with a 12'6" rod :D

Catching a new species made the $10 gas justified today :D

Hanging up the float rod tonight...the run is done. It has been a great 2 weeks. :D

Hey Everyone,

Hope you had a chance to enjoy this beautiful Weekend weather (here in Toronto)
I was fortunate enough to!

Forgot to Book a seat with a buddy to a Carp Event in Hamilton ... so decided to head downtown.
Figured it would be busy with the Marathon going on, and the great weather.

It was.
People watching at it's best.

Put on the T.U.F.A. ( Toronto Urban Fishing Ambassadors) Tshirt which meant I had to be SOCIAL

lol ... less fishing, more Talking to people.

Pretty well figured it would be a choice between Carp & Pike.
Was surprised to see all kinds of other fish as well:

- Suckers
- Bass
- Trout (Brown & Rainbow)
- Alvwies

Ended up with a Total of 2 Carp & 2 Pike.
Glad I had brought worms.

Enjoy the Video ...

Saturday April 27, 2013

Too tired to write a full report after working a 12 hour shift at the steel factory. Yesterday was trout opener and we finally had access to some headwater areas where the steelheads were spawning. We mainly fished the pool for some hungry post-spawn steelhead. Most of the females were post-spawn already. Hopefully they'll be around for another 2 weeks. I'm contemplating taking a weekday off for another go at it. Yesterday, we waited for 1 hour for parking at 5am...people were already fishing by 12am and the lot was full by 2am as I was told.

Ken - 8 steelheads (lost a bunch to log jams and hooks coming out on jumps)

Andrea - 5 steelheads (not sure how many lost)

Michael - at least 4 steelheads (we fished apart for most of the day)

Matt - at least 6 steelheads, 3 white sucker (we fished apart for most of the day)

I fished with Andrea for most of the day. We did split apart to explore little slots, runs and holes throughout the day. He was lucky that every time he was hooked up, I happened to come looking for him (whenever he was gone for a while, I suspected he's hooked up, haha). I landed a couple of decent fish without any cameraman so I just quickly unhooked and released them.

I have a couple of videos of hook ups...but one fish ran into the log jam and busted me off...the other fish head shook on the surface and the hook came out. Again, every time I start filming, I lost fish...so I stop using the cursed GoPro. I may post the videos later...pretty sweet to watch me drift and see the float goes down...and the subsequent short run.

Just got to the first unoccupied pool, saw a fish resting in front of a rock...5 drifts later...BAM!

Then I lost one fish after another 30 minutes. We moved and after another hour, I hooked this one and handed the rod to Andrea.

As the water warmed up, the day got brighter and the sun came out, the fish turned on.

My suspicion was right...we hooked and landed the same fish a couple of hours apart! Look at the spot pattern on these two fish, and the scar pattern. It's the exact same fish.

I hooked it first and handed the rod for Andrea to fight it...we gave it a good release

Then Andrea hooked it again later somewhere downstream from where I first hooked it...

Spring is here in Islamorada and so is the start of florida keys tarpon fishing. We've had luck lately fishing in the evenings as well as during the day. The evening falling tide is a good bet with live crabs, we got this nice 80 lber plus a couple other missed bites one night last week. Today we got another nice 75-85 lb fish during the day fishing a live mullet in the backcountry. We also caught loads of trout, ladyfish, and jacks, plus a blacktip shark all in the same area. Later in the day we ran out in the gulf and saw one nice cobia unfortunately he spit the bait and never was to be seen again. We ran further out and found the tripletails swarming, caught about 15 or so including our limit of keepers. Tripletail fishing is lots of fun, run and gun running the crab trap lines and sight fishing for 'door mats' a.k.a. big triple tail laid up on the surface! If your thinking of coming to Islamorada, the next few months are prime time for all kinds of fishing in the islamorada backcountry!
