Tie Lake BC
Tie Lake , Jaffray BC
Greetings,
Today I contribute my first post in a long while and first of the new year. As some of you may know ( or may not care necessarily ) i have made the move out west to Calgary.
Yes as strange as that sounds , I went to the one province which has no bass at all !
Whats a fanatical bass fisherman do in such circumstances ? Improvise ! and no that doesn't mean stock my choice of lake with bass and waiting for them to grow although
the idea always intrigues me sometimes. And when one thinks of the concept the mind starts to wander on whether its right , what the true impacts are and even if those fish
can thrive and spawn. Also whether those fish take to their available cover or form their own sort of pattern of viable food sources.
We'll as crazy as it sounds much of the bass fishing available in BC was through the introduction of the non native species. Both Largemouth and Smallmouth can be found in certain areas across BC
and don't let the fact their are mostly non native throw you off on the quality. These fish are every bit as big and beautiful as the ones in southern ontario. Infact , if you take a look into it , the next expected canadian record can potentially be broken in these reaches. Particularly the Okanagan regeon and more specifically , Osoyoos Lake, Vaseux Lake, and Skaha Lake.
However with limited time and being located in Calgary an 8 hour drive isn't exactly a weekend trip. It would be the equivalent of driving to Boston from Toronto.
Thus I have located and identified my closest options and now I can say I have experienced Bass in BC. The two lakes I have fished so far this year in BC are Windermere located in Invermere BC and Tie Lake in Jaffray BC.
Todays post is on Tie Lake , stay tuned for Windermere.
So to begin , the drive out to Jaffray is 4 hours from Calgary. The nice thing about this sort of long drive is the sheer beauty and breathtaking views of the mountains while driving through. Theres wildlife such as Bears , Moose, Elk, Deer , Mountain goats, etc
Once we arrived at Tie Lake one thing that always seems to throw me off is that the sun seems to make it feel as though its evening rather then morning. None the less , we launched the boat and on we are in water far from home , looking for a familiar fish that by some luck was put here and apparently thrives. A few casts in i could already notice some targets and some obstacles as well as an opportunity. First of all let me clear one thing up , if your looking for smallmouth and you read the countless postings that theres smallmouth bass in Tie Lake , there arent any at all. They are in fact largemouth. The first target was a weed puff loaded with baitfish , this spot produced some small fish but shortly after the water skiers and the jetskiers started causing a ruckus on the lake and this put me to the test to find 2 things . Water without pressure and cover where fish might hold to under these circumstances. This was easy , the docks were plenty on this lake and theoretically with the pressure down the deeper slots of the lake who's to say some of the big fish aren't holding to docks ?
Well surprise surprise the theory payed off big as a largemouth well into the 5 lbs range took the every reliable , multipurpose senko on a 2/0 mosquito hook wacky rigged. Its been a while since I focused on largemouth and to be honest coming back and understanding both is key in events. Theres no sense in fishing for a fishes aesthetics when moneys on the line , you go with what works well and whats going to get you to the final. Anyways , enough tournament talk.
Next stop this long weekend ? Osoyoos !

Re: Tie Lake BC
Seriously though Martin is an expert bass hunter, these are quite possibly the biggest bass I'll see all year!
But, we'll see if I make it back up to Mystery Lake this yearYes, Ed F took my avatar photo.

Hey nice to see you back on the Forums, Martin. I moved back to Ontario after my co-op in Calgary, but it was definitely a great fishing experience. Caught plenty of big walleyes and trouts in that land-of-no-bass. Great to see that you're going back to lakes in BC again! I would love to be able to get back out west and just spend a week fishing!
mmMMmmm... bet that fish tastes good!
