the issue was serious enough that Lake Ontario's strongest watchdog was alerted and watching the outcome.

the statements here should raise the hairs on the back of the neck of anglers across Canada....your rights and your access to water to fish are threatened by the weakened laws that protected them.
if july 11 vote is successful we may have only won a battle to lose the war.....the bigger picture is just comming into focus.
you need to read and follow events and participate when asked......waterkeepers is an excellent site from which to do that.Last edited by tangledline; 06-20-2012 at 07:34 PM.

I received a e-mail form a guy at Fishing N Canada, here it is...
Hi David
Your earlier message in June to FishnCanada has been forwarded to me for reply. I apologize that we did not get to you sooner.
We did carry this story in April, and had Dave Chong on for an interview. We were one of the first to bring this issue to public attention and we have been tracking the story since.
My understanding is that the signs on metro property are now down, and Executive Committee are supporting fishing on the waterfront. I also understand the port authority are still reviewing this matter and our information is that some port lands will be open for public fishing. I am taking my information from the media reports from Toronto.
I commend the "crew" that fought for fairness, and I hope that public authorities will continue to support fishermen.
A suggestion--based on my past experience from over 40 years. When you go out fishing, take a garbage bag. Spread the word to other fishermen. Always retrieve your own, and pick up a liltte left behind by others. It is a fisherman's way of showing his appreciation and respect, and it is very powerful ammunitiion when the next challenge occurs.
Thanks for listening to the Outdoor Journal Radio Program.
All the best
Here is my reply...
Thank you Mr Winters for getting back to me, you are correct, the Executive committee did pass the motion put forth by Paula Fletcher in support of fishing along Toronto's harbor front, and they did request that Parks and rec take down the signs, and they did.
Council still needs to vote on this issue to make it official. That vote takes place on July 11th, 2012. Our concern as anglers that utilize our waterfront is that the special interests at the Harbor Front Centre, ( members from city council sit on this board) they are the ones that started this whole issue around no fishing, enforcing illegally the TPA by-law, the same one Dave Chong was cited when he was stopped for fishing. These special interests are the ones that had the parks and rec commissioner put up the no fishing signs along Toronto's harbor front are still working in the background to get fishing banned along that stretch of the city.
We are keeping up the chatter, even lending our support to the city during there Family fishing day events this coming July.
That does not mean the fight is over, they are working to stop us, we have to work twice as hard to stop them, they have the ear to council, we just fish.
Please any pressure that can be brought on city council in support of fishing would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks for the ear, and...
TIGHT LINES!
David Kearney

I went to SAIL today for the grand opening to check out the carp gear.So I was wearing my CAG t-shirt and two of Canada's fishing celebrities (Angalo Viola and Pete Bowman) of the Fish'n Canada Show called me over to talk about carp fishing. They just finnished filming an episode in the Hamilton Harbour and the Toronto Islands where they were fishing for carp and one guy with them caught a 40lber in Toronto. For my American friends, these guys are big fishermen up here and they travel across Canada catching giant sturgeon in British Columbia,Char above the arctic circle, huge pike in Sasatchewan, big bass, walleye and musky in Ontario and stripe bass and blue sharks in Nova Scotia. They've done carp shows before but this time they brought they're camera's to Hamilton. We talked for an hour and other pro bass anglers joined in on the conversation and all had a great carp story and they all agreed carp fishing is growing in Canada. They said it is the next great sport fish. That means alot coming from pro fishermen of they're caliber. It's nice to be recognized as a sport fish but on the other hand more people fishing for carp could make bank space hard to find.

40lb carp caught at Toronto Islands...a city park......prohibited fishing in Toronto parks and you hurt the business of sport fishing....
the giant Sail store just had its grand openning.....fishing is big business in the GTA....if it wasn't why would these superstores be openning around the GTA. the city councillors need to see the value to the economy that fishing brings this city...
on another point
the 40lb carp was caught shorefishing and would not have been caught if access to the water from the shores of a city park were prohibitted.
Toronto could market its great carp fishing to the world if only it understood its business success in other parts of the world.
hopefully the film footage will go viral on the internet when the show is televised.
