1st bowfin of 2012
sun april 15
8am until 4pm
toronto islands
i went with my bicycle...just to piss the ford brothers and their deputy off.
i took the wards ferry but so ya all know ....centre islands ferry is running and i think hanlans too.
foggy and rainy....quite pleasent to have the islands all to myself....thanks
encountered bowfin,carp,lg mouth bass,pike
too few carp to make a resonable go at it.....
pike and bass out of season.....the bass were nesting like crazy...big cleared nests
pike were med sized ...but looked worse for wear....
this left the bowfin
the bowfin were gonna be my target anyhow....they are my favourite
found 8 bowfin to target....
3 did not like the presentation
1 bowfin broke off the attack on a worm to t-bone a pike ...the bowfin actually chomped the side of the pike...dirt was stirred up everywhere after...not much goning on for 3/4 hour after that mess....
so i got four bowfin hooked....2 circle hooks failed...straightened out...very common with bowfin
1 bowfin cut the line...
yes i landed one bowfin....
i thought by the lengths of fights and such that i was gonna have three but its battle royale out there and bowfins got the meanest streak i have ever encountered in fish....
bowfins seriously scare the shit outta of me....
the one i landed was 29 inches....
of course one of the ones that straightened the hook would have beat my pb but she had more fight than i....

That sure was a fighting day. Nicely done. Some interesting fish action you observed in the waters too. First of many for 2012, I hope.

Beauty!
I remember catching one around the Toronto islands that had a baby blue underbelly. It was in the spring so I assume those were its mating colors.Last edited by Kokemachine; 04-16-2012 at 12:56 AM.

I hate those evil fish...they can be so frustrating to catch some days I feel like throwing my rod in the water.
Nice fish Dave! Maybe I'll see you at the Islands this weekend...if the weather cooperates
