Springwood Cottages is a beautiful cottage resort open all year, owned and maintained by Cezar Spirala, located on Kennebec Lake in the Land O’ Lakes region of Ontario (near Napanee about 4 hours from Toronto). There are several cottages spotted around this beautiful piece of Canadian Shield land and each is very well maintained and clean. Each cottage also has its own personality and extra amenities, some of which can get pretty luxurious including things like flat screen tv’s and jacuzzi. The decks surrounding the cottages were also in tip-top condition. The area is nicely landscaped and the staff are young, energetic and very friendly.
We stayed in cottage #7 a smaller two bedroom cottage with a beautiful multi-level deck and view of the lake, but none of the more luxurious extras. Each cottage comes completely furnished with all your basic amenities, including a full kitchen and bathroom, tv and dvd player. The cottage was very beautiful, about the same size as my apartment (400sqft or so) and was extremely clean when we arrived. We made sure to take our shoes off before going inside to avoid tracking in mud. There is also no smoking in the cabins, though you can smoke in the screened veranda, and all of the linens smelled very fresh. The price for this cottage for a weekend is about $400 CDN, which split between the four people it can hold is only $100 per person, not a bad price.
Accommodations were clean, comfortable, and well cared for.
Springwood offers a wide variety of services to make your stay more enjoyable. The main house has a fully equipped store with groceries, fishing lures, live bait, souvenirs and dvd rentals. There also plenty of things on the property that you can enjoy free of charge. There is a large central deck and BBQ area where you can prepare and eat meals. You can relax on the beaches and go for a swim or in the shade under one of the many gazebos. There are also shower and laundry facilities available. See Springwood’s site for more info.
Boat rentals are available of course, we rented a 16′ aluminum boat with a 15hp motor for $100 per day plus gas. The boat was in good shape and the motor, while older than some place you may visit, was very reliable. We never had problems starting it or getting to our destination. It’s not surprising to learn that when I was speaking to the owner later he repairs boat motors as part of his business, no doubt his own motors are very well maintained because of that. They have 20 or so fishing boats in different sizes, all in great condition, including a few different offerings like a big pontoon boat or kayaks and paddle boats for the kids.
Springwood has everything for the fisherman and/or family vacation.
Kennebec Lake is a 19 mile long lake that stretches east to west. The lake is home to both smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye, pike, perch, and panfish. The lake is a series of ledges that easily drop 10′ in only a few feet horizontally and as deep as 80′ in some places. The lake is very rocky and has some seriously rocky shorelines in places. Because of the rocky structure the smallmouth were very easy to find, bouncing plastics off the bottom proved to be the best tactic, but spinnerbaits and crankbaits also produced. We caught lots of bass, even some big rock bass, a few northern pike and a couple big sunfish. Our trip was bass opening weekend in Ontario for this zone and while we didn’t catch any trophy fish we all had an amazing opening weekend.
One thing I realized on our last day there was that we had never seen more than 5 other boats on the water. This can be quite rare here in Ontario, in many cases you will see dozens of boats in a single day. This is partially because there are very few cottages on this lake, about 300 or so, where some nearby lakes of similar size have 3000.

We didn’t catch any trophy fish, but we did catch a lot of fish.
Overall I would have to say that my stay at Springwood Cottages was very enjoyable, and I would definitely recommend Springwood to people looking for a full package resort that will have something for the whole family to enjoy. The owner was such a nice guy he even took us out on his boat for a few hours to show us a few of his favorite spots.
Springwood Cottages is a great place to stay, and just narrowly misses a fantastic score. I would visit Springwood again.
