There are many ways that the USA is dealing with the Asian Carp invasion, there’s the electric fences (that may have already failed), a campaign to get people to eat them by calling them “Kentuky Tuna“, even extreme aerial bow fishing groups, but none of these ideas are as awesome as this one from the Peoria Carp Hunters! Life Science Investigations (WVIZ/PBS/Ideastream) has put together a phenomenal multi-part investigation on the invasive asian carp threatening the great lakes. If you can’t spend the time watching them on right now I highly suggest downloading them to your phone or ipod to watch later, or even watch them in a background tab with the audio on.

Seriously, go watch it.

They Came From The Canal!

Environmentalism might seem pretty boring, but life is what you make of it. If you really want people to start taking the environment seriously sometimes those people need a little creative kick in the pants to jailbreak their thought processes into reality. This poster from Earth Day 2010 created by students at the University of Chicago catches your eye as a 1950′s style horror poster, but instead makes a commentary both about the dangers of the asian carp, but also the hysteria surrounding their possible spread to the great lakes.

“We wanted it to be fun. Environmentalism can be all gloom and doom…and sometimes our students too…”

…And that’s certainly true. Admittedly, we greenies can be at times…un-fun. And, U of C is not exactly considered a party school…

“We were looking to engage in a different way. The hysteria over the carp, while hundreds of other invasive species threaten the Great Lakes, can sometimes feel like one of those 1950’s movies…”

Invasive Carp Are No Laughing Matter- Ok It’s Kinda Funny…

The invasive asian carp are causing massive destruction across the midwest, and Illinois (my home state) seems to be one of the most affected. I have a few more related posts that I’ll try and have up later today/tomorrow about how even the US Army has been called in to help prevent the asian carp from making it in to the great lakes.

While this invasive species is no laughing matter, this video is quite hilarious.

Think that was cool? Check out the Redneck Fishing Tournament where guys are taking an active part in capturing this invasive species and removing it from their local waters.

We’ve seen a few videos of these Asian carp in action, but never heard of them breaking jaws!

“Jodi had just fired at a fish when a second fish, about 12 pounds came out of the water to her right and struck her in the side of the face. Her initial reaction was “I’m hurt”. She was immediately taken to the doctor that told her, her jaw was broken. The prognosis is good, but the price is going to be 6 weeks of having her jaw wired shut. “

“Mexican Walking Fish” Threatened With Extinction

Ok, first of all it’s not actually a fish it’s a Salamander and they’re called Axolotls (pronounced ACK-suh-LAH-tuhl). These guys wear their gills on the outside and are able to regenerate most body parts should they become damaged or severed.

One problem is with non-native fish species like the Asian Carp and the African Tilapia that eat young Axolotls. They haven’t evolved in the same environment, so they don’t have good defense mechanisms against them.

The other big issue is habitat destruction. Lakes have been drained, and wastewater from Mexico City pollute waterways. This will not be easy to fix, but something will have to be done because these species that are threatened are just the canary in the coal mine. Bigger problems are on the horizon.

Scientists have yet to agree on a method to save these creatures, but a sanctuary is expected to open in the next few months in the waters around the Isla de las Mu�ecas (Island of the Dolls), apparently named such because “the owner hangs dolls he finds in the canals to ward off evil spirits.” I’m not even kidding, check out these photos of the Isla de las Mu�ecas.

You can get Axolotls as pets, but taking care of them doesn’t seem to be very easy. I wouldn’t recommend buying one for your teenage daughter as a replacement for her NeoPet that’s for sure!

In North America, most people don’t like carp fishing. The don’t like carp in general. European and Asian carp have been introduced to our waters and have thrived. Personally, I like carp and carp fishing – but not as much as this guy.

While the introduction of a invasive species to a water system can destroy local fisheries, it can make for a pretty funny news report. Especially when the reporter is afraid of fish.

Sadly, these asian carp are on the verge of entering Canadian waters; which is bad news for any fisherman.
