Tuna Fishing Adventures, Nova Scotia

It’s been more than 9 days, 12 hours and 42 minutes since I stepped off the Fisher’s Grant, a tuna fishing boat docked in Cape George, Nova Scotia. Not a minute has passed since that I haven’t thought about that trip.

The day started with extraordinarily high hopes. The boats captain, A.J. Francis of Tuna Adventures had called me late the day before. I could hear the excitement in his voice. He told about the days events, “One of our best days yet!” Seven tuna hooked and four of them brought boat side before being gently released back into the depths. The biggest fish was an estimated 900+ pounds, while the smallest was a measly little 400 pounder. Hardly worth the trouble I’m sure.

My original plan was to make the three-hour drive up to Cape George early in the morning and have a quick nap before the sun came up and our adventure would begin. I was way too excited to sleep. Instead, I climbed the rocks near the marina and sat quietly, watching a bright red sun rise from the sea. A.J. arrived shortly after and greeted me with a big smile and firm handshake. We climbed on board his boat the Fisher’s Grant, a 45 foot fiberglass boat built by Doucette for one purpose, catching big fish. The first mate John Gavin arrived and within minutes we set off.

Another Animal Death Mystery

Thousands of dead turtle doves fell from the sky in Faenza, Italy in yet adding to all the other strange animal deaths happening around the world. Adding to the mystery the birds were all found with strange blue stains on their beaks.

This mystery however, was just a case of indigestion caused by overeating. The turtle doves gorged themselves on seeds, which caused indigestion and hypoxia, the lack of oxygen eventually killed them.

Really though, bird deaths aren’t that uncommon- that said you can now track the “Aflockalypse” on google maps.

Season Shot is the “ammo with flavour.” This ammunition is made from tightly packed seasoning bound by a fully biodegradable food product. You actually shoot the seasoning right into the bird with deadly impact and flavouring, or “shoots, kills, seasons” as they say. The seasoning pellets, which replace the traditional metal pellets, actually melt into the meat flavouring the bird from the inside so you don’t have to pick them out when cleaning your birds.

* Ok, this product isn’t actually available for this christmas season and the prices haven’t been set yet either. Still it would make a novel gift for the bird hunter. But hopefully they’ll be out next year, so keep them tucked away in your christmas notes for next year.

TreeHotel has designed some of the coolest outdoor structures I’ve seen in a while and The Mirrorcube is beautifully invisible. I’d love to stay in one of these places.

The tree hotel concept meets the increasing interest in wild life-/eco tourism where one may encounter and experience the pristine nature of Sweden. The cube provides living space for two people: a double bed, a small kitchenette and bath, a living room and roof terrace. Access to the cabin is by a rope bridge connected to the next tree.

To prevent birds colliding with the tree hotel, a transparent ultraviolet colour, visible for birds only, will be laminated into the glass panes.

As much as I dislike birds, I gotta say, this one is brilliant! This sort of behavior isn’t that uncommon in the bird world either – crows are known for using tools to get to their food.
