The yearly contributor contest is back and better than ever! This year we’re going to give away even more prizes, and the contributor of the year will receive a custom one-of-a-kind Sportsmans Trophy Plaque designed by Fishing Fury.

We’re still collecting gear for the full prize list, but I can tell you that there are already over a dozen great prizes in the pot from great companies like Water Gremlin, Insect Sheild, Big Smallie Jigs, Zazzy Pop, Survival Straps, LunkerHunt, Fishing Butler, Militant Outdoors, Frog Hair, and more!

Contest Rules

These are the rules for the 2012 contributor contest, please read them carefully. You must comply with all the rules to be eligible for the grand prize, the high quality images are required to create (print) the best Sportsman Trophy Plaque possible.

  1. All fish must be legally caught in 2012 under the stated rules of your local department of natural resources. No out of season fish will be accepted for this contest. In some cases we may ask you to give us help finding this information to confirm your catch.

  2. At least two high-resolution (4 megapixel or greater) digital photos. We want the ones straight off your digital camera, no photoshopping or colour correcting allowed. Just the raw photos please. This is a requirement of the grand prize, though you could still potentially win secondary prizes with a low resolution photo, the higher resolution the better.

  3. At least 100 words about your experience. Don’t forget to include a title, location, species of fish, weather conditions, and lures used.

  4. Your full name, mailing address, email address, along with your photos and story, emailed to staff@fishingfury.com with the subject of “2012 Contributor Contest”. Alternatively you can post your entry to our forums and tag the thread “2012 Contributor Contest” and PM your mailing address to us.

  5. Multiple entries are allowed, though you can only win one of the top prizes.

  6. By submitting your story and photos to this contest you give us the rights to republish them on our website.

  7. All contents must be received before January 1st 2013.

Good luck to everyone and we look forward to seeing your entries!

Sportsman Trophy Plaque at the Spring Fishing & Boat Show

When I was walking around the Spring Fishing & Boat Show I was on the look out for Jordan Gooderham, who I met last year at the Sportsmans Show and his booth for the Sportsman Trophy Plaque. Both because we’ve chatted many times about his product (which I love BTW) and also because he’s supplying the grand prize for the 2010 contributor contest! This is Jordan’s second year with his plaque business and it sounds like things are going well for him, and I certainly hope that the word of mouth and sponsorship here on Fishing Fury has helped.

While I was sure that I’d see Jordan there, I certainly didn’t expect to see Clive there! No Clive wasn’t actually there, but his picture was! The picture of Clive accepting his Sportsman Trophy Plaque I made for him was on their main poster, and Jordan also created a new layout theme for the plaques and used the picture of Clive with his trophy northern pike from Little Vermillion Lake! I would feel bad that this plaque is quite a bit more impressive than the one I made if it weren’t for the fact that it was created by the creator of these plaques himself!

We will be announcing the second place winner of the 2010 Contributor Contest later this week and hope to announce the first place winner soon after! I’ve got to finalize the photos and get everything sent off to Jordan for printing.

With the arrival of a new year comes the time to examine where you are and where you want to be by this time next year. Every year since we started this site we’ve been overwhelmed by growth and feedback from our community of friends and this year should be no different. As our viewership grows, so must we, so must our content- and unfortunately sometimes so must the cost of running and maintaining this site, both in time and in money.

2010 Contributor Contest Results

We’ve collected all of your entries together and will be making the final decision on prizes this week. We’d like to publish one or more of these a week, while we get our prizes together to surprise the winners, leaving the very best for last. There is some good news for those of you that do not win one of the top three prizes though, everyone that submitted an entry will receive a prize- your very own copy of Fins & Skins Magazine 2010 where Clive and I wrote several editorial pieces. It’s like a piece of Fishing Fury history!

Blog Updates

In the next few days, though probably not until this weekend, I will be making several updates to the blog including some minor cosmetic changes. Other changes you might want to be aware of are:

  1. Removal of the WYSIWYG comment text box, this has prevented most mobile phone users from commenting and very few users actually use this feature.
  2. Adding an MGID widget under posts, we’re going to try some content sharing and see if it works out for us. The widget will only be displayed when viewing the single post page, not indexes- and only for non-logged in users.
  3. Trying some social networking widgets, again. (Twitter, Facebook, etc)
  4. Removal of OpenSky store links. We had a wonderful time working with OpenSky and their team, and would definitely recommend it to other bloggers- but we simply don’t have the time to dedicate to really pushing the store as much as we’d like.
  5. More videos! This year I’m going to not only try to take and upload more short video clips, but I’m also going to start going back and pulling out never before seen clips from our video library dating back to 2004!
  6. More reviews! We have a ton of reviews that we want to complete this year, including several reviews of fishing rods, reels, and even a ton of great camping equipment.
  7. More galleries! Now that we’ve got a great and integrated gallery system we’re going to have to start buckling down and getting these uploaded- I want to shoot for at least one gallery per week if possible.

Forum Updates

Pretty soon I will be biting the bullet and buying a copy of VBulletin 4, and once we’re ready we will be migrating our current forum system over. VBulletin is a far more mature forum system than our current software (SMF) and will include several great features that are going to take the community aspect of our site to the next level!
