Omega Protein Company boats about 3 miles from Mississippi Sound were fishing for Menhaden when they apparently snagged debris under the water and the boats’ nets tore open dropping 400 thousand dead fish into the water. Menhaden are not fish used for human consumption, the Omega Protein apparently processes these fish into fish meal and fish oil based products used in pet food and agricultural products.
Menhaden are not used for human consumption. They die quickly, and they spoil rapidly if not immediately gutted and iced. They are also very bony and smelly.
Though there are no photos, you can imagine how disgusting it must be.
Gill netting is a very effective way to catch large amounts of fish. The biggest problem with using gill nets is that most of the nets are laid out and left unattended, resulting in hundreds, if not thousands of wasted fish. The video below shows and unattended net at low tide. Several dead fish lie rotting in the sun. Ideally these fish should have been harvested, and the unwanted species and smaller fish could have been release alive. Sadly, this is a common sight throughout the United States and around the world in both fresh and saltwater.
An online petition has been created by FlyfishMagazine.com Saltwater Editor, Captain Gordon Churchill to help stop the use of unattended gill nets on the North Carolina Coast.
1. Unattended gill nets are a wasteful fishing method and should be attended all times to stop wasteful killing of non-targeted fish, bird and turtle species.
2. Mandatory attendance would stop the waste due to the person fishing the net being right there and able to release the fish before it dies.
3. We support commercial fishermen and their desire to make a living from the water and also support fishing methods that are unwasteful.
