Modeled after Duchamp’s 1913 ready made, Bicycle Wheel, this auto-jigger harnesses the power of the wind. A silver dinner bell rings when a fish bites. Perfect for catching panfish and Dadaists. Debuts Sunday January 29th, 2012 at the Art Shanty Projects.

The Art Shanty Project is a four-week art show slash social experiment inspired by traditional ice fishing huts. The show is open until February 5th, and is taking place on Medicine Lake, Plymouth, Minnesota.

Maybe wind power isn’t your thing. Well how about steam power?

Ok, it’s not really rocket powered, instead the rocket acts more like an alert system for when a fish takes your bait.

For obvious reasons the rocket cannot be hooked up to the line on the reel and send your catch flying in to the air.

We’ve covered the Wavealk kayaks in the past, and it’s no doubt that they’re some of the most bad ass kayaks we’ve seen for fishing. Check out this video where a guy retrofitted a leaf blower into an air powered motor for his wavewalk!

It doesn’t look very efficient, but it sure beats paddling!

The Lawnmower Powered Canoe

Here at Fishing Fury we love DIY home-built boats and fishing gear, and the lawnmower powered canoe is no different- complete with steering wheel console, throttle control, even a stereo system! The driver sits in the very front, where the steering console is located, and the motor hangs off the back of the canoe. So far the only thing left to complete is the electric starter so you don’t have to climb into the back to pull start the motor, and then climb back to the front steering console without ending up in the drink.

Egg Timer Time Lapse Video

Every now and then I stumble upon and idea that is so simple and so awesome I can’t believe I didn’t come up with it myself. When this type of situation arises, I find the best thing to do is steal the idea, make it your own, and show off to all of your friends and family. This little camera trick is remarkably easy to achieve. Check it out!

If you are a handyman, you probably have everything you’ll need already. If not, all the parts you need will cost no more then $5-10 (assuming you have a digital camera capable of time-lapse photography). You will need:

A 1/4″ bolt

Super Glue

An egg timer

There is not much to it. I glued a bolt to the top of the egg timer, and a nut to the bottom to attach a tripod. Thats it. Seriously. Here’s another sample video.

There are several other ways to combine an egg timer with your camera, but this was the quickest and cheapest way for me.

And if you are really creative, here is a more advance tutorial on how to convert you egg timer!

Solar Powered Fish Fry Will Melt Your Face

This is definitely not recommended. But if you’re ever out of fuel and happen to have a satellite dish nearby, perhaps you could build one of these for your next shore lunch. Just remember to wear protection! I’d recommend both eye and crotch protection, just in case you happen to walk the wrong way across the beam of light and cook the wrong hotdog…

They should really look into this high tech new invention called a mirror! It can magically change the direction of light thus allowing you to heat the bottom of something. Like say a frying pan.

Behold The Canoe Made From Chopsticks

We recently discussed Campion’s efforts to produce a boat made an environmentally friendly boat made from bio-resin, but what about making boats from recycled materials, or maybe just materials that would otherwise go to waste. For example, what if you made a boat out of the chopsticks people throw away after meals!

A former city employee in the Fukushima prefecture town of Koriyama has built a 4-meter (13-ft) long canoe from thousands of used disposable chopsticks recovered from the city hall cafeteria. Bothered that perfectly good wood was going to waste after a single use, Shuhei Ogawara — whose job at city hall involved working with the local forestry industry — spent the last two years of his career collecting used chopsticks from the cafeteria. An experienced canoe builder, Ogawara spent over 3 months gluing 7,382 chopsticks together into strips to form the canoe shell, to which he added a polyester resin coat. The canoe weighs about 30 kilograms (66 lbs), which is a bit heavier than an ordinary cedar canoe, but Ogawara is confident it will float. A launching ceremony is planned for May at nearby Lake Inawashiro.

Homemade Hydroplane Boat!

If I ever get to a point in my life where I no longer need to work a 9 to 5, I’ll spend my non fishing time learning to build things. To start, I’d love to take some classes to learn all about marine mechanics. With a little bit of time and know-how I could make something like this!
