I hope all of you mothers out there are having a great day so far! While I didn’t get to see my mom today, I will be hopping on a plane in a few days to visit her in Ontario and I’m really looking forward to it! Without my mom always encouraging me to go outside and play, I never would have developed my love of the outdoors and fishing, and for that I will always be grateful!

The only thing I love more then fishing, is fishing with my son Ash. Sure I don’t get to catch as many fish. I still have to bait his hooks, tie his knots, and cast for him. But when his eyes light up when he sees a fish its all worth it. No matter how small a fish he catches, its always huge to him. Teaching my son about fishing and instilling what will hopefully be a lifetime love of the outdoors is just about the most rewarding thing I have ever done.

Ash hooked his first fish when he was a year and a half, and was slightly scared by the event (he didn’t know what was going on when the line started pulling back!). Catching his second fish was a pretty similar experience, and he wanted me to reel the fish in for him. He had always been pretty shy about touching the fish until our most recent trip when he grabbed a small trout right from my hands!

Before he was born everyone used to tell us to cherish every moment, because it goes by so fast, and in the blink of an eye, two years is gone. Its hard to grasp if you aren’t a parent, but time really does fly when you’re having fun, and since Ash was born I have had the time of my life. Here are a few of my favorite photos from the last two years.

So I’ve been taking my son Ash fishing with me regularly since April. He’s got a solid grasp on reeling even though he isn’t even two years old yet. He has never caught a fish by himself so we went fishing for a few hours yesterday to try and get his first fish. Its was pretty hot out, so we stuck to deep drop offs and he finally hooked into a fish by himself! He hooked into a nice little bass and I could tell he wasn’t quite sure what to make of the whole event. I’m sure it didn’t help that I was running around madly to get the camera. The moment I started recording the event he decided he was done and simply put the rod down on the ground and stepped back. Luckily, the bass wasn’t big enough to take the rod into the drink. I picked up the rod and the fish shook lose – so close!

While getting ready to publish this story I realized that we haven’t had any original Fishing Fury editorial for 2009 which makes this the first! What an amazing start to the year!

Kim Bain-Moore has been called the First Lady of Fishing after securing her name in history as the first woman to fish the Bassmaster Classic. We recently had the opportunity to have a short interview with Kim and ask her a few questions about her love of fishing, her experience fishing competitively and what it was like to be the first woman to fish the Classic.

Kim Bain-Moore shows off her catch during weigh-in at last years Women's Bassmaster Tour event in Lewisville, Texas.

Fishing Fury: Hey Kim, let us start by saying it’s a great pleasure to speak with you. You’ve broken a lot of barriers in the world of fishing and it’s great to see the sport grow and evolve with women competing in big tournaments.

Who would you credit with building your love for fishing from a young age?

Kim Bain-Moore: Without a doubt, my Mum (Lynn) and Dad (Steve). They were always proactive in creating opportunities for me to get outdoors and enjoy nature. My fondest memories are spending time with my family fishing and hunting on my weekends and vacations. I was also a member of many sportfishing clubs in Australia, so I have been very privileged to have grown up around many diverse and talented anglers.

I’m just getting settled back in after a great two weeks in Ontario. I wish I could say this was a fishing trip, but it was a trip to see the family and some old friends. We flew in to Toronto and spent a couple nights at may parents place before heading two hours west to London, Ontario to visit my sister who had just given birth to a beautiful baby girl. I was hoping to take my son, niece and nephew out for some carp fishing on the Thames River but some pretty serious flood water put a stop to that. We decided a trip to the Toronto Zoo would have to make up for the lack of fishing!

Just about every animal was out and about (no doubt they wanted to see my new Fishing Fury hat), so we took well over a hundred photos at the zoo.

The day after the zoo we had a baby shower to attend before heading north to Kincardine, a small town located on the beautiful shores of Lake Huron. There we stayed with my old friend Ashley, her husband Scott and their two children Bob and Margaret. They have a great little house in the middle of farm land. My son loved the goats and chickens!

My wife Gillian took advantage of Scott’s artistic talents and got her foot tattooed before we left, but not before Scott and I got out to do some fishing. Scott took me down to a nearby river in search of some steelhead trout, and we spotted some right away! We spotted several good size trout in the river but couldn’t coax any to bite. Scott spotted to nice size fish in the distance and army crawled into location with his fly rod. I helped direct him where to drop his fly while he lay on his stomach and seconds after the fly hit the water a nice little pike went air born! We were both surprised to see a pike in the little river, and even more surprised that Scott was able to land it with a really light leader. I climbed into the river to land the pike.

You may remember some of Scott Duncan’s fish tattoos – I was super jealous that I wasn’t getting tattooed. Hopefully the next time were in Ontario I can fish with Scott and get tattooed.

Finally, on the day before we were ready to fly home, I made my way to Toronto Islands to meet up with Jon. I got there fairly early and had a chance meeting with one of our readers named Paul. We fished together through a few thunderstorms before Jon met up with us and we saw some sunshine. Paul landed two nice fish and I landed one before we called quits after being pelted by hail.

Check out the rest of the Toronto Island photos on Catch The Fury

Despite the lack of fish, we had a wonderful time in Ontario and got to catch up with friends and family. Next time I’ll be sure to visit during bass and muskie season!

My son is 19 months old and he has an unhealthy obsession with fishing. Actually I’m the one with the unhealthy obsession with fishing, but my sons love of fishing is very odd considering he has never actually caught a fish. I mean he would if he could, but his little hands aren’t quite ready to work a fishing reel effectively.

Every time I’m working on making fishing lures, he is at my side. He cries when I put away my tackle box. Half of his vocabulary revolves around animals and fish. He knows hooks are sharp, but it never prevents him from wanting to play with them. Luckily he has never had a hook in his skin. Yesterday my wife found him stacking my lure paint jars on my desk. I think he really enjoys our fishing trips on Saturdays because it my one day off work and we always get to spend it together. Is it normal for a 19 month old old little kid to love fishing this much?

As some of you know, I was born in the British Virgin Islands. I haven’t lived there since I was a little boy, but I did enjoy a prolonged stay there in 2006. I still feel homesick whenever I think of the islands and maybe one day, my family and I can move back. For now, I resort to watching old videos we made while we were there a few years back. Lots of warm weather and lots of excellent fishing, it doesn’t get much better then that.

PS. If anyone needs an island fishing guide and has the cash to cover my expenses to get there, I’m all yours!
