Liquipel is not a case or static film, it’s a microscopic hydrophobic (water repellent) nano-tech armour. The Liquipel treatment means your favorite electronics will be 100% water proof (inside an out!) with absolutely no visible changes, and the treatment is said to outlast the lifetime of your device. Armour your iPhone4s costs about $60 USD plus shipping, though right now Liquipel is offering free ground shipping to start. If they could put some of these machines nearby where I could drop-off items for a few hours to be waterproofed I’d be the first person in line. I would do my iPad, iPhone, and 7D at the same time probably even my macbook if the price was right.

Because I’ve spent so much time in Algonquin Park this year I upgraded from my usual Ziploc back to a SeaLine E-Case for added protection. It’s a great case, but I’m certainly not about to submerge it intentionally for very long. That’s where the Joy Factory RainBallet comes in to play.

Even before I go into the features of this underwater case for the iPhone 4 you’re probably already thinking about price. Aftermarket underwater cases are well-known for being outrageously expensive sometimes exceeding the cost of the device they house. This certainly isn’t true for the RainBallet, this IPX7 (protected against full submersion for 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter) spec case only costs about 50 bucks. Considering your phone costs upwards of 500 bucks, that’s not a bad price.

Overall the Joy Factory RainBallet looks well made, the rubberized front and textured back give a comfortable grip even when wet. It’s bulky, but lightweight and a snug fit for the phone. There are three latches along the top that you have to fully engage before it’s ready for submersion. The handy line around the outside serves as a visual reminder. The touch screen works well through the case, though it does need slightly more pressure. The home button is the only mechanical button that can be depressed once the case is on, though I have been able to depress the power button once or twice I haven’t been able to do it consistently enough to say it works. You’ll also be happy to know that the camera functions are fully supported and you can shoot photos and videos through the Sharpvue™ lens protecting both the front and back camera. The Intelli-filter™ design allows sound to travel both ways through the case, so you’ll be able to capture audio in all your videos, listen to your ipod, or even conduct a business meeting underwater.

More photos after the break!

This long weekend you better not get caught without a device or amazing human trick that can open a bottle of beer. Because without one you’re a pretty useless guy, and the makers of the iBottleopener know this and thus they’ve mashed a bottle opener right in to your iPhone case. Now you can enjoy the device you love, with the beverage you love.

Any review involving beer deserves a good beer, and while I didn’t have any Lakemaid Beer I did have a nice ice-cold bottle of Weihenstephan. I received this case for free as part of a swag package from SoftLayer sent to my work, since I was the only one with an iPhone it was all mine. I’ve used this case for a few weeks, and it’s gotten pretty banged up. Mind you it’s in and out of my pocket all the time, falling out of my pocket sometimes, tossed on my desk, even accidentally mixed with keys and other sharp objects. So it’s definitely run the gauntlet as far as an everyday case.

The first thing you’ll notice is that the case is quite bulky in your hands and it’s got some extra weight in that bulk too. Inside that bulk however is where the metal bottle opener resides and it definitely feels very secure. The case is actually great for drop protection as the back side is much heavier so it should almost never land screen down, and the overall shape seems to aid in dispersing the energy as well as feeling comfortable in your hands. The matte finish is also a nice tactile touch, but as you can see it flaked off pretty quickly along with the SoftLayer logo (their branding not the makers iBottleopener).

You can still access and use all your external buttons, headphone jack, and camera with this case and the bottom slides off easily for those who use docking stations. I also didn’t have any problem with the camera lens being blocked by the case despite the thickness. One thing I don’t like about sliding cases like this is that dirt and dust can easily scratch the back of your device if you don’t clean off the camera and case with a microfiber cloth before putting it on.

But can it open a beer? Or will my iPhone 4 crack in half under the pressure…

Yes it can! And yes, it’s only 11 AM but it’s Saturday so I can start drinking anytime I want!

Fair (3.5 of 5)
The iBottleopener is a good case, but perhaps a little too bulky for everyday use. Slip this case on before your trip to the cottage, beach, or camping and you've got everything under control.

3.5 out of 5

*

*

*

*

*

There is an iPhone 3G model available too.

Today is the final day of the Spring Fishing & Boat Show, and since I spent a good chunk of money there this weekend on some new salmon fishing gear I thought I’d stay home today and post about everything that happened. Overall the show seemed to be a great success, large crowds, great seminars from pros and sweet deals on all kinds of fishing gear.

The show had an enormous fishing tank and stand where the pros did their seminars, and was spread across two huge halls. There were hundreds of boats, booths, even RVs (ok most of the RV’s were outside). While I didn’t get any good opportunities to get photos with the pros, they were often swarmed by kids (and adults acting like kids), I did manage to get a shot of Italo Labignan doing his best “deer in headlights impression.” As the show went on in to the evening the power went out across the whole place, I figured it was time to call it a night after that.

Sorry the photos are a lower quality than normal, I spent most of my first day using my iPhone4 and posting live updates and photos to our Twitter feed. I will be posting more photos this evening after dinner.
