Blue Water Jon Meets Blue Eyed Squid

If you’re a fan of fishing photography there’s no doubt you’re a fan of Jon Schwartz AKA Blue Water Jon. We’ve covered some of Jon’s amazing photos in the past, and this time is no different. Well, it’s a little different in that it’s not fish, but instead a massive school of squid inches from his face.

Today I came face to face with a giant shoal of squid and got some amazing underwater pictures! I had hoped to get fishing photos of white seabass, thresher sharks, and yellowtail, but I never dreamed I would encounter a massive, frothing mass of squid. I really lucked out! This was a local Southern California excursion where I accompanied my kayak fishing friend Josh Pruitt. He has an uncanny knack for catching big fish from kayaks.

You can read more about Jon’s experience in the local San Diego news, as well as on Jon’s website with more complete photos.

My First Guided Trip – Juanita River

I had never really thought of booking a guide, especially on waters I have been fishing my entire life, but it had to be one of the best experiences of my life. Not only was it my first guided trip, it was my first time on a kayak too. Juan, my guide from Kayak Fish PA, had me paddling like a pro in about an hour. After that, we were all over the smallmouth. I think we caught about 10 that trip, but none of the fish were under 16 inches, most being around 18 inches.

Guides are worth the money, so don’t let the high prices scare you away. You’ll learn a lot – even if you think you know it all…

World’s 1st Stand-Up Paddle Striped Marlin Catch

That’s right, you thought the guy who caught a shark from a stand-up paddle board was crazy. Wait until after you watch this video, then tell me who’s crazier. Kudos to this guy and his chiropractor for a stand-up job!

On November 14th, Carl Schroderer and the crew of the fishing boat, Kelsey Lee, attempted and accomplished the first successful hook, fight and release of a Striped Marlin on a Stand-Up Paddleboard. The feat was completed off the coast of the infamous Magdalena Bay in Baja California Sur, Mexico. The Marlin was caught on live bait with 50 pound test line in just over 8 minutes.

We’re no stranger to Magdalena Bay, we’ve never seen any marlin but we have been whale watching.

Happy Fathers Day!

Happy Fathers Day to all of you dads out there! I’ll be making my second annual solo muskie fishing trip to New Brunswick. Last year I spent most of my day fishing from shore, but this year I’ll be in a kayak and hopefully I’ll be able to find some productive water. The weather doesn’t look great, but hopefully the fishing is!

My NB muskie from last Fathers Day!

Wish me luck!

Extreme Kayak Fishing!!

It takes a certain level of bravery to fish from a kayak 10km (6.2 miles) from shore, but it takes an absolute crazy man to catch a 10 foot shark while kayak fishing 10km from shore!

At least it wasn’t a great white!
