Magellan’s iPhone/iPod ToughCase

The Magellan ToughCase is more than just a case to prevent your iphone from breaking if you drop it. The ToughCase features an additional battery and extended GPS receiver wrapped in a shockproof waterproof exterior. The ToughCase will definitely protect your iPhone, but at $200 bucks it’s not exactly protecting your wallet. Especially since “accidentally damaged” iPhones are easily the number 1 way people get upgrades, and with the iPhone 4 coming soon you’ll probably want to wait.

You’re also probably saying to yourself that it looks pretty bulky, and you’d be extremely correct, it’s about 3 times the thickness of the iPhone 3GS (even more iPhone 4′s). The touch screen still works through the case of course, and you can still talk on the phone normally and even listen to music through the headphone jack. Combine this with theNavionics Lake Maps app and you’ve turned the iPhone into the ultimate boat accessory.

You know this really has me considering building an iphone transducer and app – that would be a cool project that nobody else is probably working on right now, and with the dock getting more and more open to the iPhone developers API I wonder if I could pull it off..

Navionics for the iPhone!

That’s right, now you can get quality water maps for your iPhone! That’s full coverage from the road to the water. The Canada lakes map is only $4.99 and I’ve purchased mine in advance to use on this weekends trip to Springwood Cottages on Kennebec Lake.

I’ve already taken a sneak peak at the map for this lake and the area where I will be staying and I must admit that I’m impressed with the detail. The only thing I’m concerned about is the accuracy of the assisted GPS. Needless to say I will be testing this quite a bit this weekend since I’m not familiar with the lake.

A big thanks to Martin who brought this product to my attention in the forums.

Wish me luck!
