The Kingfisher

There are a lot of birds out there with some great fishing techniques, but few make it look as spectacular as the kingfisher.

No More Snow!

Canada has the reputation of being a country entirely covered in snow. And if you asked the average American about Canada, they’d tell you that polar bears roam as freely as cats, igloos are more popular the trailers, and that Canada’s military specializes in skiing and snowball combat. Well most of that isn’t true. In fact most of Canada gets no more snow than the northern half of the United States.

Out here on the east coast of Canada we’re still getting snow. One day we’ll have t-shirt weather, and the next day flurries. I suppose its come with the territory, Nova Scotia is almost entirely surrounded by water and thus the weather can be quite unpredictable. Yesterday was a fun mix of rain, snow sunshine and hail, but none of it stayed on the ground. I’m looking forward to some warmth and sunshine so I can take my little boy fishing, but it looks like Mother Nature still has some snow planned for Nova Scotia. I guess we’ll just have to fish in mittens.

Flurries
Wet flurries – the only thing worse then dry flurries.

Bird Vs. Fish Vs. Snake

In either case, I’m pretty sure the fish looses this round.

Fugu by Adam Guy

In purely culinary terms, Fugu is quite a versatile ingredient that possesses a unique texture, lending it to a number of different methods of preparation. The very high prices paid for Fugu meals give it a rather hallowed status and is considered quite the indulgence, whilst the apparent danger associated with such a poisonous fish imbues the diner with a sense of daring or adventure. In fact, the gourmand’s name for raw Fugu, tessa, is an ironic term derived from the phrase teppō sashimi, or ‘musket sashimi’. However, with the correct preparation Fugu can be enjoyed quite safely and here in Japan, especially in the eastern Kantō region, the hungry fisherman can indulge himself in Fugu dishes that normally command prohibitively high prices in exclusive restaurants.
