The Detroit River Walleye Run is an Urban Fishing Dreamland

Don’t think the Detroit River is one of the premiere urban fishing destinations in North America? Think again, you’re about to get schooled. You won’t find any signs of the great outdoors on this trip, trees and mountains will be juxtaposed with factories and smoke stacks. But the fishing, oh boy. You won’t believe me until you watch this video anyway, so press play.

Toronto Sportsmen’s Show: Mission Accomplished!

The Toronto Sportsmen’s Show is now officially over. Everyone is packing up and getting ready to head back home, it’s a shame an event like this can’t go on forever. But let’s be honest, my wallet couldn’t handle it!

I met so many wonderful people at this show, and I’m proud that I was able to spend so much time chatting with them about their lodges, products, and even share some great fishing stories with people from all over North America. As with things of a limited nature like this there are also many things that I simply forgot to do, or simply didn’t have the time. I’ll cover some of the missing bits in a later post, but for now I’m going to sit back and find some dinner.

I also ran into Ed on Saturday and Sunday. He took the photo above and today we both passed the boater exam. We are now officially licensed to pilot personal watercraft in Canada!

Ed’s also the reason why I didn’t get any posting done saturday night. I ended up going to his place downtown to have dinner that night and as it turns out he had a copy of Bass Pro Shop’s The Strike. This of course eventually lead to some epic intoxicated fights with huge lunker bass like the one below (19.9lbs Largemouth Bass). I’m definitely going to pick up a copy of this game the next time I’m at BPS, I had a great time playing it, and would love to review and own it.

Don’t go too far! We’ve still got a ton of great content from the show that we’re going to post!

New 2010 Salmo Colours!

These lures are difficult to find in North America, but our European members will probably recognize these Salmo lures immediately. Salmo has released several new colour patterns for many of their lures, however the Salmo Slider is one of my favorites and is now available in some truly amazing colours. I especially like the clown colours, definitely need a few of those!

Kopper’s Live Target Lures Look Real!

The 2010 season is slowly beginning here in Ontario and other parts of North America and the new lures and equipment are starting to hit the shelves. One of the things you may have noticed over the last few years is that fishing lures are getting more and more realistic, not just in looks but some companies are now accurately producing the swimming dynamics of fish with high-end swimbaits. We’ll be covering the new 2010 gear through out the spring and hopefully carry some of them in our OpenSky store.

One of the new lures, and companies, that I’m most excited about this year is based right here in Ontario. Koppers Fishing was created by Grant Kopper who has been making his own lures since the age of eight, and now thirty years later his company is now selling in Canada and the United States. Koppers lures spare no expense in detail, these are some of the most realistic crankbaits I’ve ever seen and their Live Target System makes it easy to find the lure that fits your applications. The new Blueback Herring is one lure I will definitely be picking up this year, this bait looks like a solid contenterd for monster bass and big pike. Lures sell for between 10-12 dollars each.

Check out this video from WFN featuring Grant Kopper and one of his Live Target Crawfish crankbaits.
